Ladies playing in Thursday's Club Stableford, sponsored by Professional Travel, were fortunate to play in beautiful spring sunshine.

Welcoming everyone to prize giving, Lady Captain, Mrs Moya Brady thanked Professional Travel for their continued sponsorship and encouraged ladies to support them and indeed all sponsors.

In first place was Lily McMullan with 39 points beating Patricia Hughes, who also carded 39 points, into second place. Maggie McKee took third place with 36 points.

Hopes of play at County Armagh Golf Club over the St Patrick's Day weekend were scuppered by wretched, miserable weather. And in any case, any on-course action would likely have been overshadowed by the coinciding re-opening of the superbly refurbished clubhouse bar and restaurant.

However, the hackers and the heroes, the wonder-kids and the all-too-experienced did return to the hallowed city fairways a week later, when Ian Ritchie topped the pile in a Club Stableford event.

The two-day nature of competitive proceedings on 23-24 March offered everyone a couple of bites at the prizewinning cherry, as each player's best weekend performance would be considered in the final reckoning. But Ian's 46-point Saturday super-show proved without compare.

The off-season circumstances of green markers and preferred lies obviously aid scoring, but good numbers still come necessarily hard-earned at this time of year.

In that regard, a birdie at the 9th concluded Ritchie's bountiful 23-point outward haul, before the same hefty total on the back nine confirmed both stableford victory and the 16-handicapper's rust-free status despite the winter hiatus.

Ian's closest challenger was Paddy Digby, whose tremendous gross 69 featured birdies at the 3rd, 7th and 15th. The accruing 44 points saw Digby deservedly take his place in the weekend's overall runner-up berth.

Kenny Edgar took up the reins as County Armagh Golf Club Captain last month, and he is keen for 2019 to be another very enjoyable and productive year in the esteemed history of the Cathedral City club.

Edgar addressed a busy clubhouse at the New Year's Day inauguration ceremony that also saw Moya Brady assume the role of Lady Captain and, with characteristic good humour and humility, articulated his pride at this appointment.

County Armagh Golf Club's 2019 Captain, Kenny Edgar, is presented with his club blazer by outgoing Captain, Colm Shannon.

“It is a great honour to be given the chance to captain our fine golf club. It is not something I ever envisaged, especially since moving to Belfast a number of years ago. But I am truly delighted to follow in the footsteps of my brother Bill, who captained the club back in 2001.”

Co Armagh Golf Club Ladies’ Branch held its annual supper evening on Thursday 24 January.

Hosted by the new Lady Captain, Mrs Moya Brady, the event took place in The Charlemont Arms Hotel due to refurbishment works in the clubhouse. Lady Captain Moya extended a warm welcome to Lady Vice Captain, Mrs Anne McDonald and the large number of ladies in attendance and thanked Greta, Helen and Judith for facilitating the night.
