County Armagh Golf Club's 2017 Golfer of the Year is in rude health once again as we near the conclusion of the current campaign. Shea Smyth's two-under-par round on 23 September meant he collected first prize in a Sunday Stableford competition.
Shea dispensed with the 6th and 7th holes using just four strokes, as he followed up a spectacular eagle two on Crossways by mining a birdie from the Quarry. Another birdie out at the 12th and 13 pars elsewhere brought Smyth to a majestic gross 68, and the accruing 40 points kept him one ahead of the day's overall runner-up, Mark Frazer.
In recording 39 points, six-handicapper Mark recaptured something like the form that saw him to Gaffney Open glory in August. His classy 74-shot outing, although finishing with a sad six, also featured the happier times of 13 pars and a superb birdie at the Lakes.

Back-to-back Saturday tournament victories at County Armagh Golf Club are a rare thing indeed, but that was exactly the feat completed by Michael Curley last month.
No doubt still feeling the glow from his stunning nett 62 and Henry White Open triumph on 15 September, another super show on 22 September saw Curley reach a terrific 41-point total and the summit of that day's Club Stableford leaderboard.
Michael was four over par through five holes of a torpid opening, but he sprung into life just then and played beautifully thereafter. The now single-figure handicapper eventually put his name to a gross 75 that was boosted by a pair of birdies on the double green that houses the 8th and 11th holes.
The 4th hole at County Armagh Golf Club, par 4, index 5, the Old Third.
Closest to matching the winning tally was Beechie Hughes, who racked up eight pars on his way to a wonderful 40 points that earned him the overall runner-up prize as well as a new handicap of 16.

Kenny Spence was recently presented with the historic Tuesday Cup trophy, a fitting reward for his consistency in the long-running 18-week eclectic competition sponsored by Traynors Motor Store.
In the event which is traditionally contested from the beginning of April until the end of August, Spence's final tally of nett 41 meant he scored a comfortable four-shot victory ahead of runner-up Paul McCreesh. The remaining slots on the nett podium were filled by Philip Dowey, Kevin Smyth and Andy Conn respectively.

A superb two-over-par round from Philip Russell on 16 September rendered him the deserving victor of a stableford competition at County Armagh Golf Club.
Back-to-back bogeys at the 4th and 5th were buffered on either side by seven pars, as Philip reached the turn in just 36 blows. And he needed only the same amount again on a tremendous back nine, where another pair of consecutive dropped shots were cancelled out by birdies at Ballyheridan and Beresford.
The resultant 42-point total clipped returning member Philip's handicap to seven and defeated on a break of tie Joe Rooney, who filled second spot after blasting a characteristically sensational gross 66 that featured a nap-hand of birdies.
Ryan McVeigh was just one point shy of that mark and prevailed in category 1 through a marvellous gross 75 that was kick-started with a birdie at the 3rd. Meanwhile, runner-up among the low men was the evergreen Tom Calvert, whose nine pars, eight bogeys and one birdie represented an accomplished day's work.

Saturday 28 July stuck out like a sore and particularly wet thumb in what was otherwise one of the best summers of recent years. That was the day when rain hammered down on County Armagh Golf Club, quickly flooding sun-baked, concrete-like fairways and bringing about the abandonment of the Henry and May White Memorial Open.
When the Philip White Tyres-sponsored tournament was re-run on 15 September, there was a merciful return to the benign golfing conditions that have largely characterised the last few months. Indeed, on this occasion, such was the receptiveness of inviting greens and an almost total absence of wind, many of the 157-strong field wilfully set about murdering the Cathedral City course through scintillating scoring.
Topping that sharp-shooting Saturday pile was Michael Curley, who fired an awesome nett 62. A birdie at the 3rd and six front-nine pars saw Curley to the halfway point at just one over par, which, given his then 12 handicap, represented a seriously commanding status.
Entirely undaunted, Michael proceeded to negotiate the back-nine challenge in a serene six pars and three bogeys. That victory stroll was a mightily impressive one and the resultant gross 74 slashed Curley's handicap to 10 as well as securing a welcome late-season win.
Michael Curley is presented with the Henry and May White Memorial Trophy by competition sponsor Philip White from Philip White Tyres, and County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Colm Shannon. Also pictured are other prizewinners (L-R): Andrew McBirney, Paul Doyle, Lee Kirrane and Joe Rooney.
Among the immediate chasing pack, Paul Doyle and Jimmy Wilson enjoyed almost identical fortunes. Both men were six-handicappers at the start of play and each went on to register magnificent one-under-par rounds comprising four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars, with 33 shots going out and 36 coming home. In fact, Paul and Jimmy could only be split on a last-two break of tie, where the former's birdie at Fairy Thorn proved decisive and separated the pair into the silver and bronze positions respectively.

Among the final pieces of silverware on offer from County Armagh Golf Club's 2018 fixture list were the Half Century Cup and Arthur Mayne Cup, both of which were contested on 9 September.
County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Colm Shannon, presents the Arthur Mayne Cup to Danny McGee, winner of the annual stableford competition. Looking on is runner-up, Tim Teahan.
As its title might suggest, the Half Century Cup is competed for by those whose 50th birthday has been and gone, and emerging victorious from this experienced coterie was Jerome Leer with a massive 42-point salvo.
Leer is the very personification of the old ‘good touch for a big man' adage, and he demonstrated that in spades once more with an incredible four outward birdies and then eight consecutive pars to finish. That all added up to an outstanding sub-par gross 69 that rendered Jerome a more than deserving recipient of the trophy.
John Lavery has probably never been referred to as ‘a big man' but his Sunday points haul was certainly a substantial one. Lavery ended just two points shy of Leer and in the silver medal position on account of a classy gross 77 that contained a birdie at the 4th and 10 pleasing pars elsewhere.
Johnny Brown also negotiated the Cathedral City course in 77 blows and clinched third prize. Brown's best play came during a terrific two-over-par first nine, and he eventually declared on a 39-point total that clips his handicap to single figures.
The over-65s did battle for the Arthur Mayne Cup, and prevailing among this hotbed of venerability was Danny McGee. The 14-handicapper's fine 35-point effort included three instances of back-to-back pars, and only a no-score on the penultimate hole prevented a more convincing winning tally.

A sensational nett 62 catapulted Gary McDonald to victory in a County Armagh Golf Club stroke competition on 8 September.
A birdie at the 9th saw Gary, then playing off 14, reach the halfway juncture in a mere 38 strokes — an outward tally that was all the more impressive given that it incorporated an anomalous treble bogey on the consistently problematic 6th hole.
However, there were no such missteps on an even more accomplished back nine that featured a Sequoias birdie in the middle of McDonald's McFlurry of five pars and three bogeys.
The resultant gross 76 ensured that Gary couldn't be dislodged from the leaderboard summit in the tournament sponsored by Fairlawns Residential Home, and a two-shot handicap reduction represented the icing on his Saturday golfing cake.
Gary McDonald, winner of the Fairlawns Residential Home stroke competition, is presented with his prize by sponsor, Michael Murphy. Also pictured are County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Colm Shannon, and other prizewinners (L-R): Norman Mallon, Michael Crozier, David Leeman, John Lowe, Denis Hughes and Paul Pender.
Two shots adrift of the winner was John Lowe, who carded a nett 64. J-Lo was far from bringing up the rear as that magnificent total confirmed his occupancy in the overall runner-up berth. Lowe's gross 77 contained a hefty haul of 13 pars, and only double bogeys at the neighbouring 7th and 16th holes undermined his tilt at the top prize.
