County Armagh Golf Club's enterprising run in the 2018 Ulster Cup has been ended at the semi-final stage after defeat to Malone.
Marty Daly's charges, the first County Armagh side to go this far in the tournament in a quarter of a century, travelled to Malone for the first leg on Monday 27 August. A stern challenge awaited them in Belfast on a course set up long and battered by strong winds, and against canny opponents who had also made the last four in 2017.
They acquitted themselves spiritedly, however — a repeated characteristic of their campaign this year. Strong finishes from Malone saw the home team post the first points of the tie, but County Armagh responded admirably as Patrick Brannigan and Paul McCurry prevailed.
County Armagh's 2018 Ulster Cup semi-final line-up (L-R): Paul McCurry, Barry McGurgan, Paul Corvan, Patrick Brannigan, Declan McReynolds (non-playing vice captain), Marty Daly (captain), Cormac O'Hare and Nigel NcMahon.

Whereas County Armagh Golf Club's inaugural Scratch Cup event in 2017 was contested in radiant sunshine and agreeable golfing conditions, its second iteration, again kindly sponsored by F&K Smyth Restoration and Decoration, was an entirely different meteorological story.
On 26 August, the Cathedral City course bared its teeth for a gruelling 36-hole test, as the absolutely brutal wind and abundance of heavy rain made an unholy alliance with white markers positioned as far back as they could go and difficult pin placements on ever-so-slick greens. It was a stiff golfing examination but an eminently fair one.
The Senior Scratch Cup was competed for by members and visitors in the 0-5 handicap bracket and witnessed triumph for Lurgan hotshot Michael McSherry. He followed up a fantastically gritty level-par morning outing with a post-lunch 71 to complete a winning tally of 141.

Fifty-four ladies competed in a 4 Ball competition at Warrenpoint Golf Club on bank holiday Monday 27 th August. Warrenpoint which is also celebrating their one hundred and twenty-five-year anniversary proved the perfect venue for a ladies' outing offering challenging golf within a short journey from home and excellent catering with coffee and scones upon arrival and a beautiful two course dinner to finish the day.
The course was in beautiful condition, but it required skill and patience to achieve the top prizes. Lady Captain Elizabeth Mawhinney thanked everyone for participating in the outing and paid thanks to the Club Manager Mr Paul Revey who had been so helpful in arranging the outing. She also thanked Karen Edgar for doing the cards and the treasurer Jacqueline Kelly for helping to organise the outing.

County Armagh Golf Club's 125 th anniversary's celebrations continued with competitions for both the Men's and Ladies' sections played during the week. On Thursday 23 rd , the Ladies competed for the Trophy which was donated to the club in 1993 for the Centenary celebrations in that year. Sourced by Bee Gordon on behalf of the then Lady Captain, Eileen Steenson, the trophy is a vase produced by Tyrone Crystal, and has been played for every year since then.
The Lady Captain, Elizabeth Mawhinney referred to the donor of the Trophy, Mr. John Lowe, who had joined the Armagh Club in that year and who has been an active member since.
This year the Trophy competition was again generously sponsored by Sterling House Financial Services who were represented by former Lady Captain and current Secretary of the Ladies Branch, Paula McCrory.
In a break with tradition the prizegiving for both the Ladies' and Men's competitions was held in the clubhouse on Saturday 25 th August and was followed by entertainment by the excellent Preacher Caseys.
Lady Captain Elizabeth, accompanied by Paula McCrory presented the successful Ladies with generous vouchers while the Trophy itself was presented to Alexandra Mawhinney whose par breaking net 70 was the lowest score on the day . Three birdies on her opening 9 holes laid the basis for her excellent score.

As part of its ongoing 125th anniversary celebrations, County Armagh Golf Club granted members and visitors a rare opportunity to vie for the Centenary Obelisk Trophy on 25 August, when there was no shortage of hopeful contenders in the Open event sponsored by Irwin M&E Ltd.
Just shy of 200 players crammed onto the Cathedral City fairways, all intent on eventually emerging from battle in possession of the beautiful Tyrone Crystal replica of the course's landmark monument, which was created in the club's 100th year in 1993.
And when the scores were collated, a highly competitive Obelisk leaderboard showed at its summit Natty McGeown, whose wonderful nett 63 meant he would take home the ornamental spoils.
McGeown reached the turn in a mere 37 hits after an untroubled outward nine of three bogeys and half-a-dozen pars. Similar serenity would follow on the way home, where the neat-and-tidiness of four pars and four bogeys was upset only by the pleasant interruption of a birdie at the 15th.
County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Colm Shannon, and Open Centenary Obelisk Trophy competition sponsor, Keith Stewart, Managing Director of Irwin M&E Ltd, are pictured with prizewinners in the event to mark the club's 125th anniversary: (L-R) Philip Kelly, Andy Steed, Stephen Catterall, John Maguire, Natty McGeown, Eric Hamilton and Paddy Smyth
The resulting superb gross 76 earned Natty a new handicap of 11 and rendered him a delighted recipient of the Obelisk Trophy, which he collected at a Saturday evening prize-giving alongside Alexandra Mawhinney, winner of the Ladies' equivalent tournament.

Some words from the R&A:
“Players should play at a good pace ... It is a group's responsibility to keep up with the group in front.”
“‘Ready golf' is a commonly used term which indicates that players should play when they are ready to do so, rather than adhering strictly to the ‘farthest from the hole plays first' stipulation in the Rules of Golf ... there is strong evidence to suggest that playing ‘ready golf' does improve the pace of play.”
As regards pre-shot routines, “Did you know that if each player in a four-ball takes 5 seconds less to play each shot, the round time can be improved by over 25 minutes?”.
To enhance the enjoyment of all, CAGC encourages its members to be mindful of their pace of play and to feel free to play ‘ready golf'.

Big-hitting leftie Kevin Smyth has made hay while the sun has shone at County Armagh Golf Club this summer, collecting a number of prizes and satisfyingly reducing his handicap all the while. The latest instance of both came on 19 August, when Kevin carded a glorious nett 63 to prevail in a stroke event and secure a new handicap of 19.
The ultimately victorious outing had begun in inauspicious fashion as Smyth emerged from The Gap eight over par after five holes. However, he didn't put a foot wrong thereafter, negotiating the remaining 13 challenges in an error-free seven pars and six bogeys. So, this was a tournament triumph borne of considerable bouncebackability in addition to the obvious golfing adroitness.
County Armagh Golf Club's 14th hole, Sequoias, held mixed fortunes for players in the stroke competition on 19 August.
Second to Kevin in the Sunday standings was young Jamie Calvert, who signed for an accomplished gross 76. Jamie recorded birdies at the 7th and 14th, while eight pars and eight bogeys elsewhere ensured a marvellous nett 64 that means he's now playing off 11.
