A tournament-winning scorecard won't usually include three double bogeys in the space of five holes. However, such was the calibre of the rest of Brian McGrady's round, even that untidy patch between the 7th and 11th holes couldn't deny him victory in the stroke competition at County Armagh Golf Club on 23 April.

With the wind apparently taking a long overdue break from its howling duties, McGrady's inner composure mirrored the agreeable calmness overhead as he put together an impressive gross 79.

The white tee markers were back in play. The format was penal stroke play rather than the more forgiving stableford. It was the first of the qualifying competitions, where good scoring results in the slashing of handicaps. Placing in the rough was but a fond and distant memory. In the view of many then, the April Medal on Saturday 22 April represented the start of the ‘proper' season at County Armagh Golf Club.

Entirely unperturbed, perhaps even inspired, by the reintroduction of these more stringent circumstances was Bernard Grimley, whose majestic nett 64 sealed for him the first of this year's monthly medals.

Bernard took to the course no doubt still smarting from being pipped by his brother David to first position in category 1 in the CP McNabb Trophy on April Fools' weekend. His determination to come out on top in any familial battle this time out was absolute and, indeed, he managed to do so — but only just. With yet another brother, Kieran, matching Bernard's total but losing out on a break of tie, it appears that the Grimley clan's appetite for honours simply cannot be sated.

While early April usually marks the start of the golfing season with the Augusta Masters, the Ladies of County Armagh Golf Club begin their golfing endeavours in earnest on the last Thursday of April with competition for the Millennium Bowl for golfers in the handicap range of 0-24, and the McCall Shield for golfers in the 25 to 36 handicap bracket.

The Millennium Bowl was donated by the Lady Captain in 2000, Mrs. Cecelia Woods while the McCall Shield was donated by Flo McCall during her captaincy in 2009.

Both competitions were generously sponsored by O'Reilly and Fee, Veterinary Surgery, and the vast array of prizes were presented on the night by Anne O'Reilly.

Competition was keen for both trophies and while the course was in magnificent shape, the chilly and blustery conditions presented players with a stern challenge. This was reflected in the standard scratch of 71.

The Millennium Bowl was won by Mary Black with a nett 70, from Valerie Gordon and Moya Brady with scores of 71 and 72 respectively. Helen Forster's 72 secured her a category prize, edging out Paula McCrory who returned a nett 73.

The annual Eileen Steenson Memorial Greensomes competition took place on Thursday 20 th April. The competition is played in memory of Eileen who was a great exponent of the game of golf. A former lady captain she inspired many ladies to play and devoted a great deal of her time and energies to the juvenile girls who flourished under her guidance. Elizabeth Mawhinney Lady Vice Captain in her acceptance speech paid tribute to the role which Eileen had played in encouraging herself and her daughters to embrace the game of golf. The greensomes format encourages new pairings which would have delighted Eileen.
