While the traditional par 3 curtain-raiser to the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia, had to be cancelled amid thunderstorms and tornado threats, there were no such concerns locally as County Armagh Golf Club hosted its very own version of the event on Friday 7 April.
With the course amended accordingly in order to serve up nine testing short holes, players were treated to glorious sunshine as they went in search of pars, birdies and, ultimately, prizes in the competition sponsored by Iron Designs Armagh.
Lee Stewart, doing his most convincing Sergio Garcia impersonation, completed the challenge in just 27 strokes. This was the lowest gross score of the day and gave Lee top spot in the 0-7 handicap section.
Alongside prize winners Anne and Enda O'Reilly are Lady Captain, Gail Steed, and Philip Devlin of Iron Designs Armagh.
The 8-14 gong went to Roy Turner, who was just one shot adrift of Lee, while Seamy Toner's total of 31 made him the master of the 15-21 handicappers.
Christopher Lester extended his stay in the winners' enclosure as his 33-shot performance secured first place in the 22-28 category. The lowest nett score of the contest was returned by Enda O'Reilly on 21.
In the ladies' competition, Paula McCrory emerged victorious from the 0-20 handicap group having successfully negotiated Amen Corner on her way to a gross 34.
Pauline Vallely's round of 37 proved unbeatable in the 21-36 bracket, while Anne O'Reilly was not to be outdone by her husband, Enda, as she posted the lowest nett score among the ladies (23.5).
There were no green jackets for the prize winners or congratulatory chats with Jim Nantz in the Butler Cabin. Indeed, there weren't even any trips down Magnolia Lane or caddies clad in white boiler suits. Nevertheless, this was a very successful event that was enjoyed by all who took part and will hopefully be repeated in future years.
