County Armagh Golf Club's long-standing association with Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke continued with a two-day stableford event on 18 and 19 March.
Point-scoring was admirably high despite a weekend of largely unkind golfing conditions, as players had the opportunity to compete on both Saturday and Sunday and, therefore, take two bites at the prizewinning cherry.
The competition's worthy winner was Oliver Connell, who carded an unmatchable 47 points. Comprising nine pars and nine bogeys, Connell's gross 79 was a model of unwavering excellence.
Rounds of golf are often defined by effective damage limitation at those moments when things aren't going quite to plan, so Oliver may regard avoiding worse than a bogey as among the most satisfying achievements of his red-letter day.
Trailing that magnificent winning tally by a single point was Christopher Lester. After notching 22 points on the outward trek, Lester dropped only two shots in the last seven holes on his way to a blistering 24-point back-nine. Any repeat of this sort of performance will surely see Christopher go one better and take first place in a future tournament.
Jonathan McKnight and Ian Beaddie both carded 42 points at the top of the category 1 leader board. However, in addition to four birdies, McKnight's brilliant round included a 22-point back-nine haul, which meant Beaddie could have eyes only for second spot. Ian will perhaps regret failing to capitalise on his bountiful halfway tally of 23 points.
In category 2, 15-handicapper Tommy Mackin completed the back nine in just three over par as he racked up 41 points. Terry Chin's neat and tidy scorecard, boasting 20 points on each nine, earned him the runner-up spot.
Ben Simpson's solid 37-point total in category 3 was bettered only by Ciaran McCreesh, who signed for 38. Unlike for Connell at the top of the standings, three of McCreesh's bad holes resulted in no points, which prevented him from fulfilling even loftier scoring ambitions.
