Mervyn's a sixty winner

Mervyn Watts is proof that age is no barrier when it comes to winning golf competitions.

Just recently he celebrated his 60th birthday and on Sunday he won the Deansbridge Filling Station sponsored Stableford competition with 39 points. An excellent 19 points from the front nine holes was bettered by a further 20 on the back nine and Mervyn had the prize in the bag.

Ronan O'Reilly, who won last week's club stableford with 43 points, scored five less this week but still picked up the runners up prize with 38 points. Again it was an improvement from 18 to 20 points front and back respectively which won it for Ronan.

In Category 1 Paddy Duffy finished his round unlike the previous day, to take the first prize with 38 points, and G Hughes was runner up with 37.

Category 2 was won by Fergal McKinney with 38 points, recording an impressive 21 points over the front nine holes and 17 on the back. And just a point behind picking up the runners up prize was Eamon McVeigh with 37 points.

Peter Murtagh had an even better front nine holes recording 22 points but with just a further 15 over the back nine, had to settle for the Category 3 first prize with 37 points. And 34 points won JP Hughes the runners up prize.

Junior Cowdy exit

Junior Cowdy have 'Art' knocked out of them

Art McCrory's Junior Cowdy team put up a spirited fightback against Omagh Golf Club but sadly exited the competition after losing by just two holes in Sunday's first round second leg play-off at County Armagh.

Three matches and four holes down after the first leg at Omagh two weeks previous, McCrory recurited four new faces for the home match. And it almost proved a successful move. The County Armagh team won three matches 2 & 1 to overturn the deficit but the fourth match was sadly lost 4 & 3.

Ironically that losing partnership, team captain Art McCrory and Gary Lappin, had been the County Armagh team's only winners at Omagh. Stephen Weir and Gerry Kelly, Tony Fagan and Club Vice-Captain Brendan Smith, Brendan Lynch and Gerry Doyle all lost in that away leg.

They had it all to do on the home leg and in a spirited fighback by Gerry Doyle and Gerry Kelly, new recruits Alan Magwood and Richard Stewart, Dudley Marjoram and Tim Teehan each chalked up wins. Unfortunately McCrory and Lappin couldn't find the winning form they had enjoyed at Omagh and lost the fourth match 4 & 3. Omagh won by two holes.

Ronan rolls up for stableford win

Ronan O'Reilly chalked up 43 points to win the Club Stableford on Sunday. And he was five points clear of the rest of the field on the day.

Opening with five pars in a row, Ronan had 22 points on his card by the half-way stage. And with a further three pars and a birdie four at the par five 12th hole, he added another 21 points for an untouchable 43 points.

In-form Niall McGeown came closest to Ronan with 38 points, recording 19 over the front nine and 19 on the return trek, to take the runners up prize.

However, Ryan McVeigh will know a double bogey six at the last hole cost him that runners up prize. His 37 points still secured him Category One's winning prize. Jerome Leer was two points adrift and picked up the category's runner up prize.

Alec Nesbitt too had a tale of woe to tell - no scores at the 15th and 16th holes and with 37 points had to settle for runners up in Category 2 where Paul Kelly's 35 points - 21 from the front nine and 14 from the back - earned him second.

Hugh McEneaney, a winner the previous day, continued his winning form for the Category 3 first prize with 34 points beating Brendan Lynch, also recording 34 points, on countback.

Niall untouchable for May Medal win

Niall McGeown booked his place in the Club Championship after winning the May Medal on Sunday with an untouchable nett 65 score.

Swirling breezes made for difficult conditions throughout the qualifier, but Niall's steady scoring secured the coveted medal prize. Four over after nine holes, Niall used up just a further three shots of a his 12 handicap over the back nine. A birdie three at the course's most difficult 16th hole surely signalled a prize on the day.

Mark Frazer picked up second prize with a superb 66 off his 11 handicap. He was four over after nine holes and in similar fashion to Niall, used up just a further three shots of his handicap on the homeward trek. He too had a birdie - at the par five 12th hole.

Missed putts cost Master Niall Brady on his steady-scoring round but he still secured first prize in Category 1 with a nett 68. Brian Hughes' triple bogey at the last hole was even more costlier but he took the runners up prize in the same category with a nett 68.

Late-finishing Declan McReynolds picked up first prize in Category 2 with a nett 69 and Kieran Campbell, despite a triple bogey at the 8th hole, took the runner-up prize.

In Category 3 it was Terry Hamilton who emerged the winner with a nett 69 and Richard Stewart crept in for second prize with a nett 71, the highlight of his round birdie twos at the 11th and 15th holes.

Craig Talbot deservedly took the Gross Prize with a gross 73. He was one under after nine holes and but for two double bogeys at the last two holes it could even have been even better.
