It's a shamrock day for George and Dorothy

George Gillespie and fiancee Dorothy Harris made it a St Patrick's Day to remember after winning the Gents' and Ladies Stableford competitions.

Individually they returned the top scores to win their respective competitions - George with a superb 43 points and Dorothy with 38 points.

More than 150 golfers took to the course for the St Patrick's Day event, and as many more joined in the celebrations which followed in the clubhouse where the Guinness flowed and piping hot Irish stew was enjoyed by the hungry competitors.

Australian students Siobhan Hynes and Jamie Williams, nieces of winner George Gillespie and enjoying a gap year out from Down Under, were among the revellers to enjoy the day's entertainment and even joined Club Captain Tom Calvert in a toast to Ireland's Patron Saint, albeit with a lager!

Earlier on the course it was their uncle George who set  the pace with 22 points over the front nine holes and adding a further 21 on the back nine to claim the top prize. Leo King was just a point behind George's winning 43, but will have been kicking himself after a no score at the 18th hole - especially having racked up 23 points on the front nine.

Teacher Ian Millar chalked up 22 points on the back nine holes and with 17 points on the outward trek, claimed third prize ahead of Royal School colleague John Mawhinney who also returned 39points, and Ian Beaddie who took fifth with 39 too.

Elsewhere Dorothy wasn't aboutto be outdone by partner George and 'walkered' away with the top prize - her first ever - in the Ladies competition, her better back nine just edging it ahead of Hilary Johnston who also returned 38 points.

Past Ladies Captain Flo McCall took third prize with 37 points, Mary Black was a delighted fourth prize winner and Moya Brady's 36 points was enought to secure fifth.
