No trouble for George!

Despite the blustery conditions, George Gillespie encountered little trouble on his way to winning the April Medal on Saturday with an excellent nett 63.

The par three 9th was really the only hole which caused the affable George any bother - he carded a trible bogey six and that after firing his tee shot to the edge of the green! However, three birdies at the 1st, 12th and 14th holes with eight excellent pars saw him claim the honours at the end of the day.

Neill Monaghan with a nett 63 also was runner up on countback - a double bogey six at the 17th hole cost him dearly, although anything less than his triple bogey six at the third hole might also have guaranteed the recent competition winner a return to the winners enclosure.

In the categories, it was Kenny Edgar who led the way with a nett 67 to win Category 1 - ironically it was double bogeys at the par three 9th and 12th holes which cost him. Master Niall Brady was runner up with a nett 68. He was just two over after nine holes but the wheels came off at the 16th where a triple-bogey seven ruined an otherwise excellent card.

Fred Hanna's better back nine - and nett 69 - secured him the first prize in Category 2 where Colm Shannon also returned a nett 69.

And in Category 3 Stephen McGarvey was the clear winner with a nett 65 with John Grant five shots adrift in the runners up spot with a nett 70.

Neill Cromwell's nett 70 deservedly won the Gross Prize on the day.

Happy Easter for Philip

A par-four finish had Philip Richards celebrating at Easter - it guaranteed him top prize in County Armagh Golf Club's Easter Stableford competition.

Philip returned 44 points to take the honours ahead of Leo King who almost certainly lost out with a 'no-score' at the 10th hole.

In ideal golfing conditions Philip's was a consistent round - 22points over both front and back nines - and even with 'dings' at the 7th and 15th holes he was still to finish ahead of the pack. But it was the par at the last which he will say ultimately clinched the prize for him ahead of Leo who bogeyed the hole.

Basil Walker headed the category prizes claiming first prize among the low handicappers with a superb 40 points, although it was on countback that he pushed Michael Gill - also on 40 points - into second place. Michael no doubt, will not want reminding of his 24 points on the front nine.

Mark Stevenson marked his return to the course after a year out by winning Category 2 with 40 points, also on countback. Ian Millar came closest and he too had 24 points on the front nine.

Gary Lappin's 41 points earned him first prize in Category 3, and that included a 'ding' at the 17th. Runner up was Stephen Weir with 40 points from a round which included 'no-scores' at the first, eighth and 15th holes.

Conor McGurgan for a second consecutive week, picked up the Gross Prize with 72.

Meanwhile, in Portugal Johnny Palmer, who is 'on tour' with Roy Turner, David Baird and Alan Johnston, returned 45 points - one for the Handicap Convenor to consider perhaps!

Basil Jolly's weekly tipple willl have tasted of sweet success as he celebrated winning the Easter Sunday Stableford competition at County Armagh.

His 42 points was the winning score, amassed with 18 and an excellent 24 points respectively over front and back nines.

John Lowe was his nearest rival with 42points, J Conlon, a 6-handicapper, knocked in four birdies - at 2,7,8 and 17, to claim third prize with 41points and Danny McKee with 24 points front nine and 17 back nine, with a 'no-score' at 16, picked up fourth prize.

Stewart Stevenson too was in birdie form at the 6th, 12th, 17th and 18th holes to deservedly make his way onto the prize list with 40 points.

1st Neil Monaghan 62nett

2nd Brian Loney 63nett

3rd Colm Shannon 66nett

4th Declan McKee 67nett

5th Paddy Darragh 67nett

Neil gets it right at second attempt

There was no repeat of the previous day's triple bogey start and finish to his round for Neil Monaghan who romped to first prize in Sunday's Club Stroke competition with a super nett 62.

He opened with a par and closed with a birdie three and with a level par back nine was always going to be one better than his runners up placing from Saturday.

Brain Loney chased him all the way and with a nett 63 could be forgiven for thinking he had it in the bag only to find out it wasn't enough.

Colm Shannon will rue so many dropped shots over the front nine - he was just two over the back nine - but with a nett 66 he still picked up third prize for his efforts.

Declan McKee's mixed bag earned him fourth prize with a nett 67 and it was his better back nine which pushed Paday Darragh with a nett 67 back into fifth place.

Hughes keeps on winning track

Even from the white competition markers, there seems no stopping Darren Hughes.

The 10-handicapper picked up first prize for a second consecutive week in Saturday's club stroke competition with a superb 64 nett score.

After an unsteady start with shots dropped at the first and second holes, Darren settled into some par scoring - although he did drop another shot at the difficult fifth hole. This was however, well recovered with a birdie four at the 10th and with just a further two shots dropped at 14 and 15 his consistency was to be deservedly rewarded with first prize.

Two triple bogeys at the first and last holes ultimately denied Neil Monaghan the winning score. After a lacklustre front nine Neil got it together for the back nine where he recorded consecutive birdies at the par three 11th and par five 12th holes. And with a sprinkiling of pars he finished with a nett 66 to claim the runners up prize.

In Category 1 Mark Loughran was the player in form winning with a nett 67. Just one over after nine holes, his back nine was to include an eagle three at the par five 12th hole, and but for dropped shots at the 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes it might have been Mark picking up the top prize. Barry McGurgan was runner up in this category with a nett 68, his round including a birdie at the 12th hole.

In Cateogry 2 Gareth Frizell claimed the prize with an impressive nett 66, birdies at the sixth and eighth holes pushing Eamon O'Hagan into runners up spot with a nett 67.

And in Category 3 it was Gary O'Reilly who picked up first prize with a nett 66, with Ian Ritchie runner up with an excellent nett 67.

Conor McGurgan won the Gross Prize with a superb 72.
