Terry's card marked for Professional Alan's prize
Terry Hamilton literally had his card marked even before he hit a ball in County Armagh Golf Club Professional Alan Rankin's annual stroke competition.
For when the 16-handicapper was presented with his card before Saturday's event, the words 'needs cut - please!' were written across it!
Whoever's was the insight, it was bang on, as Terry produced his best round of the year to record a superb nett 61 to win the coveted prize.
Four over after nine holes, Terry was to use up just a further three shots of his handicap on the homeward trek to take the honours. And it needed to be that good as ten handicapper Gerry McCreesh was breathing down his neck, finishing with a similar nett 61 and only conceding on countback.
The 'young ones' led the category prizes - John Maguire (4) and Jarlath McReynolds (4) both recording nett 64 scores and also needing to be separated on countback.
A Sunday winner the previous week, Stephen Weir was back among the winners to claim Category 2's first prize with a nett 64, and Michael Curley made a return to winning form with a nett 65 to claim the runners up prize.
In Category 3 Greg McKenzie's nett 66 earned him first prize and no doubt it was his birdie start at the first hole which set him up for that win. Winston Gordon was just a point behind with a nett 67.

Stephen tops order of merit
STEPHEN Weir confirmed his spot at the top of the County Armagh Golf Club players' order of merit after winning the Sunday Club Stableford on President's week-end.
The 15-handicapper racked up a magnificent 46 points to win the competition. Just four over after after nine holes, 21 points proved a sound foundation for an exceptional back nine where added a further 25 points to top score on the day.
Thomas Murray, an 11-handicapper, was four points adrift of Stephen but deservedly picked up the runners up prize with 42 points - 24 and 18 points scored front and back nine respectively.
Five-handicapper John Maguire grabbed thrid prizewithe 41 points and PJ Brannigan (11) was a point behind on 40 for fourth prize. Sean McAnenly graciously accepted fifth prize on countback, having also recorded 40 points.

Ronan adds President's Prize to his growing collection
Ronan O'Reilly's recent rich vein of form culminated in winning the prestigious County Armagh Golf Club President's Day prize.
The 10-handicapper has featured more than most in the prizes during the past month and deservedly added to his collection President PJ Collin's special award. His 43 points proved unasailable in the stableford competition which took place in ideal conditions.
More than 200 club golfers took to the course on the day, all hoping to capture the coveted prize and just a point was to separate the top three finishers.
Ronan however, was to emerge top scorer, his 22 points over the front nine holes and a further 21 on the return trek confirming him as the eventual winner.
Bogeys at the par four sixth hole and par three seventh were his only mistakes on the outward journey and he recovered those with a birdie four at the eighth hole. Another bogey at the 10th hole wasn't the best start to the back nine with another at the par three 13th. But he never looked back after that with five consecutive pars racking up the score.
Kyle Johnston, another improving player of recent weeks, was Ronan's nearest rival, his 42 points earning him a runners up prize. And the 12-handicapper will undoubtedly rue the double bogey six at the fourth hole which reduced his front nine score to 19points. With 23 points on the back nine, he could have been forgiven for believing he might have done just enough to win it.
Kyle Wilson led the category prizes with a similar 42 points, and will be equally disappointed not have to lifted the President's prize with just 17 points from the back nine holes to add to a magnificent 24 points scored over the front nine holes.
In Category 2 Terry Hamilton collected the the prize with another 42 points, 20 and 22 points respectively scored over front and back nine holes by the 17-handicapper. And in Category 3, Brian Liddy (19) was declared the winner with 38 points.
Past President Dougie Somerville was the deserved winner of the Past Presidents and Captains Prize with an excellent 42 points, 21 and 21 points front and back securing him the win. And Kevin Ward picked up the Council and Committee Members' Prize with 41 points.
The best Gross on the day was returned by Conor McGurgan, playing off a handicap of two.
President PJ Collins also had prizes for the top ladies who played earlier in the week and after countback involving three finisihers on 39 points, it was Emma Oliver who emerged victorious ahead of Orla Fox and Hilary Johnston.

Double-take for season's best scores in Open Stroke
Two season best scores of nett 59 in County Armagh Golf Club's Open Week Stroke event had Competitions Convenor Davy Baird seeing double!
Thomas Clarke and Colm Shannon both returned the exceptional scores and had to be separated on countback.
14-handicapper Colm was first to sign for his superb nett 59 score and quite rightly must have been thinking his name was on that first prize. But amazingly he was to be disappointed when his son Mark broke the news of playing partner Thomas Clarke recording a nett 59 also.
Thomas, playing off an 11-handicap, was just one over par after nine holes, dropping shots at holes three and four before recovering one of those with a birdie two at the seventh hole. But after further dropping shots at ten and 11 he hit the birdie trail big time, recording over the final four holes.
Colm, in similar fashion, was just one shot over after nine holes, the perfect score blemished by a dropped shot at the first. A birdie two at the 13th hole compensated somewhat for a double bogey at the par three 11th hole, and in between dropped shots at 15 and 18 he birdied 17th for a two over par back nine. Unfortunately even his season's best to date just wasn't enough to win it.
Third prize, and on any other day a first prize winner, was claimed with a nett 63 score - that produced by Jerome Leer, a seven handicapper who dropped just two shots short of a perfect round.
Both John McKinney and Niall McGeown, fourth and fifth respectively, must surely also have fancied themselves for the big prize, with scores of nett 63 and 64. But it was a day for the big guns, Thomas and Colm deserved winners with exceptional scores.

William leads home youthful winners
It was youth to the fore in County Armagh Golf Club's Open Stableford competition on Saturday (July 30) as William White ran up an excellent winning score of 43 points to claim the honours
Shea Brady, an eight handicapper, impressively also mastered the blustery conditions to claim second prize with 42 points.
Just three over par after nine holes, 12-handicapper William had 20 points on his card at the turn, and added a further 23 to his tally over the back nine where he surprisingly finished with a double bogey six for just a point.
Shea was equally on top-scoring form and after opening with a birdie three at the first, enjoyed a steady round with further birdies at 11 and 15 for his round two over par and 42 points.
In Category 1, Andrew McTaggart secured first prize with 41 points - a steady round indeed from the 12 handicapper. And Michael Cullen picked up runners up prize with 40 points.
Cathal Cullen's 42 points - 22 front nine and 20 back nine - took the honours in Category 2 on countback from Andrew Dunwoody who also returned 42 points, ultimately giving way to Cathal after a double bogey six at the 17th hole.
In Category 3 Tim Teehan was the man on form and picked up first prize with 41 points. G Cullen's 39 points earned him the runners up prize.
And the Best Gross score of the day was returned by Kieran Donnelly.

John strikes Open gold
County Armagh Golf Club's Ulster Fourball Team Captain John Flack struck gold in the Open Stableford competition, returning a winning 44 points for his Open Week prize.
John, who is also the club's Sponsors' Convenor, soaked up the excellent weather and course conditions to produce a front nine 23 and back nine 21 points winning score.
Runner-up Ciaran Black was suprisingly two points ahead of John at the turn. And while his 19 points on the return trek saw him sign for 44 points also, he had to concede to John on countback.
The first of the Open Week Men's competitions attracted a large field and high scores were the order of the day throughout.
12-handicapper Caolan Doyle pitched in with and excellent 43 points to claim third prize - his back nine 25 points including birdies at 10 and 18.
And just a point behind was Simon Weir who produced the best back nine - 26 points - of the day in his 42 points which claimed fourth prize. No scores at the third and eighth holes undoubtedly cost him dearly.
Adam Ashforth's 24points from the back nine edged fifth prize in front of a host of players who also returned 42 points.
The Presentation of Prizes will take place on Saturday 13 August, all Prize winners are requested to attend.

Eamon lifts Gerry Lenagh Trophy
Eamon Mallon was the big winner in County Armagh Golf Club's Open Week, lifting the Gerry Lenagh Trophy.
The annual stableford competition was the climax of a thrilling series of mens', womens' and juvenille events and once again attracted one of the biggest fields of the year. Breezy conditions removed any chances of repeated record scoring seen earlier in the week. But it still took an exceptional score to win the coveted trophy presented by the Lenagh family.
Eamon's 42 points claimed the prize. 22 points accumulated over the front nine holes laid the foundations of what was to be a steady scoring round in which he added a further 20 points over the back nine holes.
It was just enough to edge it in front of a chasing pack of four players all returning 41 points and having to be separated on countback.
Barry McGurgan's 23 points back nine took the runners up prize, Brendan Powell's back nine 21 earned him third, Damien Grimley's no-score at 14 cost him dearly but his 21 points back nine still secured him fourth place, and Nigel McMahon claimed prize number five after a sizzling front nine 23 points and a further 18 recorded on the homeward trek. Ronan O'Reily continued his run of good form to take sixth with 40 points.
The Gross Stabelford competition was equally competitive and four-handicaper Neil Cromwell's level par round (36 points) deservedly claimed the honours, six-handicapper Conal Hamill second with 34points beating Conor McGurgan (2) also with 34 points, on countback.
Downpatrick Golf Club's Stephen McAneney won the Visitors Prize with 37 points.
