Student James lifts Woods trophy

BIG-hitting James Conlon lifted the Woods Trophy in the Open Scratch competition at County Armagh with a superb exhibition of golf and a brilliant Gross 71 winning score.

Birdies at the second and eighth holes compensated for a bogey at the first hole and a double bogey at the fourth holes. And with pars all of the others, the city student was just one over par at the halfway stage. In between a further seven pars James tucked away a birdie four at the twelfth hole and but for one dropped shot at the 17th it should have been a level par back nine.

However, his Gross 71 it was enough to win the coveted prize by a shot from seven-handicapper Stuart Lee who returned an equally impressive Gross 72. In very similar fashion he too was just one over after nine holes and with birdies at the 10th and 12th holes might even have bettered James' score had he not dropped shots at both the par threes on the back nine and a further shot at the relatively easy 15th hole.

Six-handicapper Kieran Donnelly was even more impressively one under after 15 holes before he dropped a shot at the 16th hole and a further two at the 18th to finish with a Gross 73. It deserdly earned him third prize.

And Wayne Telford picked up the Gross 0-5 Handicap prize with a Gross 70, the three-handicapper knocking in no less than six birdies during his level par round.
