Top-scoring Paul lifts Allen Cup
PAUL McKeown's nett 64 proved the winning score in the Allen Cup competition at County Armagh. But his two-shot victory was a story of what might have been a much bigger winning margin.
A nasty triple bogey seven at the 18th hole was penciled on his card as he completed his round, leaving him wondering if he really had blown his chances of lifting the coveted trophy in the competition, which was once again kindly sponsored by JR McMahon, Scotch Street, Armagh.
But he need not have worried. His was the top score on the day.
It was two shots better than six-handicapper Paul Doyle who signed for a two-over par front nine and level par back nine for an impressive nett 66 which earned him the runners up prize.
Shea Smyth was one under par after 15 holes and but for consecutive bogeys at the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, the Cup was surely his for the lifting. He will however, be satisfied with the Category 1 first prize with Stuart Lee runner up after returning a nett 68.
Eamon O'Hagan's name was back in lights as he claimed his third prize in as many days producing a nett 66 to win Category 2 - and that achieved despite a two-shot handicap reduction from the previous day. Oisin Gill's nett 66 on countback earned him runners up.
And Kieran McAuley also shot a nett 66 to claim first prize in Category 3 where Roger Seeley was runner up with a nett 67.
Paul McKeown (second from left) is presented with the Allen Cup by County Armagh Golf Club Captain Pat McAleavey and Brian Graham from JR McMahon, Scotch Street, Armagh, sponsors of the annual stroke competition. Included also are category winners Eamon O’Hagan and Roger Seeley

Eamon scores Brazil-ian hat-trick
BRAZIL may be the home of the hat-trick hero presently, but County Armagh Golf Club has its very own in Eamon O'Hagan.
The affable retired school master notched up three consecutive competition victories in three consecutive days at the local club.
An amazing 46 points in the Open Seniors set the tone for a winning week-end for Eamon. The very next day he produced another untouchable 43 points to win the Alexander Mills sponsored Open Stableford before wrapping up his hat-trick on day three with a category win in the Allen Cup stroke competition.
Despite a double-bogey six at the final hole of the Alexander Mills sponsored Open Stableford event, Eamon racked up 21 and 22 points over front and back nines, respectively to take the top prize.
In contrast it was a double bogey six at the 18th hole which ultimately denied Eamon Toner that top prize. He too returned 43 points but on countback was declared runner up.
Neil Linton returned to wining ways to claim third prize with 42 points - birdies at the 2nd, 4th, 9th and 12th holes highlighting a superb round for the six-handicapper.
Sean Brannigan was a further two points adrift but claimed fourth prize with 40 points - a score returned also by Dermot Haughey and Fergal McKinney who collected fifth and sixth prizes respectively.
Conor McGurgan's 35points and Neil Cromwell's 34 points were the best gross points scores.
But the day belonged to Eamon O'Hagan who, the previous day had secured an Open Seniors victory ahead of Rockmount Golf Club's Leslie Anderson (43pts), Conlon Rice (42pts) and Tom Calvert (40pts).
County Armagh Golf Club Captain Pat McAleavey congratulates Eamon O’Hagan on winning the Alexander Mills Open Stableford Competition in which Fergal McKinney (left) and Eamon Toner (right) were runners up.

Pedlow's perfect prep for Captain's Day
ALAN Pedlow completed the perfect preparation for Captain's Day at County Armagh with victory in the last club competition before the big event.
The quietly-spoken newly-wed, playing off a handicap of six, produced a one-under par round for a nett 63 to win the club stroke event.
It was the 9th hole before he dropped a shot. But a birdie 3 at the 5th hole compensated to leave him level par at the turn.
Seven pars followed, then a birdie 3 and a par to finish a truly superb one-under par round.
Early-bird Andrew Allen returned an equally impressive nett 63 but was to lose out to Alan on countback.
With his spanking new Nike collection of driver and woods, Jimmy Wilson was out to impress, and did so with some gusto - a level par round and nett 65 score claiming first prize in Category 1. The five-handicapper's only blemishes bogeys at the 4th and 17th holes compensated by way of birdies at the 10th and 11th holes.
His namesake Kyle Wilson, of a handicap of seven, also returned a nett 65 to take the category runners up prize.
Kenny Richardson was two shots better than all the rest in Category 2. His nett 65 secured despite double bogeys at the 5th and 16th holes. Fred Hanna was runner up with a nett 67 - three double bogeys on his card costing him dearly.
And in Category 3 John Grant claimed the first prize with a nett 64. Michael Smyth was a shot further adrift on nett 65.
