'Red' letter day for Brian

SUCH was his impressive margin of victory in County Armagh's recent Open Stabelford, Brian Wilson's nickname 'Red' was appropriately fitting - embarrassingly so!

The flame-haired Wilson's 45 points was the outstanding score in the competition, kindly sponsored by King Brothers Quarry.

The 13-handicapper dropped three shots on both front and back nine holes respectively, but birdie 2's at the 3rd and 13th holes saw him register a nett 61 for his 45 points.

Nathan Grimley on any other day might have claimed first prize with an excellent 43 points. But the 7-handicapper had to settle for runners up prize on this occasion. 22 and 21 points respectively from front and back nine saw Nathan home with 43 points.

Gerry Kelly's 43 points, secured despite four double bogeys, was enough to earn him third prize with John George Willis a further two points a drift on 41 points picking up fourth prize.

Dungannon Golf Club visitor G O'Callaghan was a deserved fifth prize winner with 41 points and Nigel 'Onion' McMahon's steady 40 points took sixth, with Mark Loughran picking up 7th with 39 points.

Conor McGurgan's 37pts and Neil Cromwell's 35pts were the best Gross scores on the day.

Winner of the King Bros Quarry sponsored Open Stableford, Brian 'Red' Wilson is presented with his prize by Mark and Jonathan King from the Armagh company, who joined Club Captain Pat McAleavey for the competition presentation to Brian and and runners up, (from left), Nigel McMahon, Neil Cromwell, Gerry Kelly and John George Willis.

David keeps Grimley family name in winning spotlight

DAVID P Grimley rejoined what appears an endless list of Grimley's who have featured in the prizes this year at County Armagh by winning the recent Sunday stableford competition.

His 41 points was the best on the day in the Complete Living Solutions sponsored event - albeit in countback where his better back nine pushed another 41 pointer, Alec Nesbitt, into second place.

But it meant David now joins dad David, who was also listed among the competition winners on the day, Kieran and Nathan - all from the same wider Grimley family - in the list of top prize winners in club competitions this season.

A respectable 17 points from the front nine holes reflected little of what 21-handicapper David was to produce on the back nine - a superb 24 points - and that with a 'no score' at the 18th hole.

Alec Nesbitt's 'no score' at the 15th hole undid all his good work in securing 21 points on the front nine and restricted his scoring across the back nine to 20 points for his runners up prize.

Andrew Millar also signed for 41 points and had Senior Cowdy team captain Richard Black wondering had he made the right decision to list the young Killylea man as a reserve in the match against Concra Wood on the very same day. But Richard no doubt will claim he called it correctly in team selection with County Armagh taking 29.5 of the 32 available points against their border club neighbours.

Andrew, meantime, with a one under par round, secured with a birdie 2 at the 9th hole, will also have been satisfied with his first prize in Category 1. Shea Smith's 39 points earned him runners up.

Paul Kelly with 38 points, picked up the top prize in Category 2 - his score one better than David Grimley's 37 points.

And Brendan Lynch was best in Category 3 with 38 points, again one better than runner up Brian Cleland who produced a massive 24 points from the back nine holes.

David Gimley collects his son David's prize after he won the Complete Living Solutions sponsored Sunday stableford competition at County Armagh Golf Club. Captain Pat McAleavey makes the presentation and is joined by Paul Doyle, representing sponsors Complete Living Solutions, and other prize winners in the competition, Brendan Lynch, Andrew Millar and Alec Nesbitt.

Anthony is Henry White winner

HIS card may reflect a measure of safety in the final three holes, but even with three bogeys to finish Anthony McElmeel's nett 61 was the outstanding score which clinched the the Henry White Memorial Cup at County Armagh.

A three-over-par back nine, which included a birdie at the par five 12th, after a steady front nine, where six shots were dropped, secured the coveted trophy for 18-handicapper Anthony by a massive four shots.

Philip White, proprietor of Philip White Tyres Ltd, Armagh, and sponsor of the Henry White Memorial Cup, joined Club Captain Pat McAlaeavey for the presentation following the day long open stroke competition.

A previous winner, Jim Carberry had to settle for the runners up prize on this occasion. His nett 65 was the next best, but still way off the winning score set by Anthony.

Honorary Treasurer Pat Brannigan also returned a nett 65 but conceded that runners up spot to Jim on countback.

In fourth place was Francis Grimley with a nett 66 which might have been a serious challenge to the day's top score had he not recorded a triple bogey at the first hole and a double bogey at the par five 8th.

Winston Gordon was back in the winners enclosure to collect fifth prize and will almost certainly incur the wrath of the handicap convenor on the back of a winning run.

And Paul Doyle who has spent the last few weeks picking up prizes for his son Caolan, was himself on the receiving end this time around for sixth place, after returning a nett 67.

The final prize of the day went to Chris Stockdale who also returned a nett 67 - four double bogeys on his card almost certainly his downfall.

County Armagh Golf Club Captain Pat McAleavey and Philip White, from Philip White Tyres Ltd, are pictured with prize winners in the Henry White Memorial Cup Open Stroke Competition. They are, from left: Anthony Fagan, Paul Doyle, Jarlath McReynolds, Andrew Millar and Winston Gordon.
