Jimmy brightens summer with June Medal win

JIMMY Wilson’s summer arrived in fine style as he celebrated a June Medal victory at County Armagh Golf Club.

The six-handicapper signed for a superb nett 65 to claim the coveted prize and a place in the Club Championship in September.

A one-under par 33 shots for the front nine holes set the scene for Jimmy. Indeed it was the unlucky 13th hole before he dropped his first shot.

A birdie three at the 15th however, restored his one-under par score, but on the very difficult 16th he again suffered a bogey.

Jimmy steadied himself with a par at the 17th but with his best round of the year in sight he let slip a further shot to finished with a one-over gross 71 and winning nett 65 score.

Despite that nervous finish it was enough to claim the Medal ahead of MJ Murphy who also carded a hugely impressive nett 65. But on countback he had to settle for the runners up prize on the day.

Newcomer John Beale led home the low handicappers with a nett 67 off his four handicap - birdies at the 3rd, 13th and 18th holes were the highlight of a superb round, but a double bogey six at the first hole ultimately cost him dearly.

Paul Corvan was the Category One runner up and could have the handicap committee looking over his shoulder once again with his nett 67.

Mark Stevenson’s nett 66 claimed the Category 2 first prize – his better back nine winning ahead of GE O’Reilly who also carded a nett 66.

Gary Baird’s nett 66 and again, better back nine, earned him first prize in Category 3 where runner up on the day was Gerry Cullen also with a nett 66.
