Coveted Hirsh Cup in Jim’s safe hands
JIM Bruce was the worthy winner of the Hirsh Cup, one of County Armagh Golf Club’s oldest and most coveted trophies.
Won by lady member Maisie Hirsh in the European Championships in the 1920s and presented the club in the 1930s, the trophy is now played for annually at the beginning of each season.
And in this year’s stroke competition, sponsored by NetStretch Limited, it was the affable Jim Bruce who produced the winning score – nett 65.
In difficult wet and windy conditions, Jim was the master of consistency and held onto five of his 18 handicap to record that nett 65.
Meanwhile, Gary Baird will chalk this up on his calendar as a winning weekend with a nett 66 securing him the second of consecutive competition prizes.
Club Captain Richard Black, but for a double bogey at the final hole, might have walked off with the honours in this popular competition. He returned a nett 67 which earned him first prize in the low handicap category. Teenager Adam Cromwell was among the prize winners taking runners up in the same category – the first anticipated of many more this season.
In Category 2 Danny McGee’s nett 67 was enough to secure the first prize ahead of Barry Scully  on nett 68
Lee Kirane returned the same nett 68 to claim the Category 3 prize and Anthony McEneaney was runner up with a nett 69.
Jim Bruce is presented with the Hirsh Cup by County Armagh Golf Club Captain Richard Black after winning the netstretch ltd stroke competition. Included is sponsor Cormac Knott from NetStretch Limited, runners up and category winners, Danny Magee, Barry Scully, Lee Kirane, Adam Cromwell, Anthony McEneaney and Gary Baird.

Philip adds Bumble Bee Cup to his silverware haul
PHILIP Kelly collected his second piece of silverware in as many months at County Armagh after winning the Bumble Bee Cup.
With the CP McNabb Trophy won in April, the 5-handicapper really has set the bar at a challenging height for his club colleagues by returning a superb nett 63 to win the latest qualifying competition kindly sponsored by WD Irwin Aggregates Ltd.
A birde 2 at the 9th hole completed a one-under par front nine for Philip. And with a further three birdies at the 12th, 15th and 16th holes to compensate for bogeys at the 10th and 17th, there was simply no catching him.
Michael Calvert was the closest anyone came to Philip on a rain and wind fuelled day on which many golfers chose not to finish. His nett 67 deservedly took the runners up prize.
Ronan O’Reilly kicked off what proved a successful week-end by winning the low handicap prize with a nett 69 – a feat he was to repeat the very next day. Stewart Stevenson’s nett 69 off a handicap of 3, was also hugely impressive and deservedly clinched the category runner’s up prize.
And from the same O’Reilly family, Garrett was the Category 2 winner with a nett 71, Art McCrory claiming the runners up prize with a nett 72.
Category 3 was won by Brian Rafferty with a nett 74 and Eamon Toner was a further shot adrift with a nett 75 to take the category runner’s up prize.
County Armagh Golf Club Captain Richard Black presents the Bumble Bee Cup to Philip Kelly, winner in the company of runner up Stewart Stevenson, Alistair Harrison from competition sponsors Irwin Aggregates Ltd, and Ronan O’Reilly, category winner.

PGA Tankard win for Colm
COLM McElroy’s 40 points was enough to win the County Armagh Golf Club PGA Tankard.
In the Armagh Potato Company Ltd sponsored stableford competition, his was the best score – albeit equaled by the big-hitting Kenny Spence. But on a back-nine countback it was Colm who claimed victory.
Despite three one-pointers on his outward trek, Colm had penciled 18 points on his card at the turn. And with a four over par back nine securing a further 22 points, he was always going to be in with a shout, especially in the damp, heavy under-foot conditions.
Kenny Spence kicked his round of with a birdie three and with a further birdie 2 at the 7th hole he had amassed a hugely impressive 25 points after nine holes.
However, two triple bogeys and a double bogey saw him add just a further 15 points from the other six holes to equal Colm’s 40 points and concede outright victory on countback.
Ronan O’Reilly led home the low handicappers with 39 points winning the category prize – a birdie at the par four 17th hole the highlight of a steady round. Tom Fox was runner up in the same category his ‘ding’ at the 12th hole ultimately costing him first prize when he returned a total 39 points to equal Ronan’s
Ronan McWilliams produced a steady round to score 39 points for the mid-handicap category – a birdie 2 at the 11th penciled on his card also. And Danny Magee may have been two points further a drift but his 37 was enough to take the runners up prize on the day.
Eric Hamilton won the high handicap category with 38 points with newcomer Lee Kirane runner up with 35 points.
Colm McElory is presented with his prize by Andrew Johnston from Armagh Potato Company Ltd, sponsors of the PGA Tankard competition at County Armagh. Included also is Club Captain Richard Black and category winners Danny Magee, Lee Kirane, Stewart Stevenson and Ronan O’Reilly.
