County Armagh course celebration brings golfers from far and wide
More than 300 golfers took part in County Armagh Golf Club's celebration to mark the 40 th anniversary of the course opening 18-holes.
A 4-Ball Classic competition, sponsored by Milwaukee Power Tools, attracted over 65 mens, ladies and mixed teams. And with the immaculately manicured course bathed in sunshine throughout the day top scores were recorded by many.
A coffee morning, hosted by the club's ladies branch and kindly sponsored by Johnston's Bakery, packed the clubhouse with, past captains, presidents, members and friends recalling the course opening 18 holes back in May 1975.
Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council Darren Causby, was also among the visitors and took time to chat to many enjoying coffee, cream scones and tray bakes in the clubhouse overlooking the picturesque Palace Demesne.
To mark the special occasion Club Captain Richard Black and Lady Captain Margaret Marjoram planted a commemorative tree on the 18 th hole, joined at the official ceremony by Club President Dr Oliver Woods and Lady Vice Captain Una Cullaine.
It was late into the evening before the final team tripped off the course and like the many before them enjoyed a sumptuous meal in the Green Room Restaurant before the celebrations began in earnest.
Compere Pierce McBride introduced a host of music acts, singers and artists throughout the evening with a short break in proceedings for a raffle run the Ladies Branch for a variety of prizes which raised an impressive £700.
It was standing room only in the packed clubhouse when Competition's Convenor John Lowe announced the prize winners.
Club Captain Richard Black expressed his delight at the numbers who had taken part in the competition and supported the day's events.
He said: “We have seen County Armagh Golf Club at it's best today, from the beautiful course, an excellent competition supported by many members and friends. I would also like to thank the many sponsors who have supported this major fundraising effort by the club and the organising committee lead by Vice Captain Marty Oliver. It gives me great pleasure to say this has been a hugely successful day all round.”
