Andrew sparkes for PGA Tankard win
ELECTRICAL engineer Andrew Dunwoody mastered the the blustery conditiions to clinch an outstanding victory in the County Armagh Golf Club PGA Tankard competition.
The 12-handicapper was six points clear of the rest of the field in the Sunday stableford event. Indeed his winning round amassing 44 points was also the best gross score on the day. With 23 points over the front nine holes he was well on his way and added a further 21 for that winning total.
Gerard O'Callaghan, nursing a handicap cut from the previous day where he won his category, was the nearest anyone got to challenging Dunwoody. But his 38 points was still six shy of the winning score. An excellent back nine yeilding 20 points on top of of 18 secured on the outward trek was enough to take the runners up prize.
The blustery winds and occasional showers throughout the day obviously played havoc with scoring and somewhat less than average results were returned.
Shea Smyth topped the 0-12-handicap category with 37 points and that after failing to score at the 11th hole. Tom Calvert was runner up with 36 points and he too had 'dings' on his card at nine and 12.
Michael Carson nursed 37 points to win the 13-18 handicap category ahead of Convenor Art McCrory on 35 points.
Michael McKenie however, will have been well pleased his 38 points and better back nine secured him first prize in the 19-28 handicap category ahead of Paul Hughes also returing 38 points.

Big Derek's no longer the bridesmaid!
Big Derek McKeever may well have been thinking this golfing season was going to one of 'always the bridesmaid and never the bride'.
But that all changed with a superb round of golf which saw him lift the County Armagh Golf Club's Bumble Bee Cup.
In consecutive competitions the previous weekend, 14-handicapper Derek produced scores which just edged him into runners up spot. But there was no-one to touch him when he returned an impressive nett 64 score in the Bumble Bee Cup competition.
Birdies at the second and seventh holes saw him on his way to one-over for the front nine holes. By the time he had completed 14 he had dropped only one other shot. But then came a nervous finish with shots dropped at the remaining four holes, including a triple bogey at 18.
However, he had done enough to secure victory ahead of 11-handicapper Lee Stewart whose impressive nett 65 earned him the runners up prize. The Killylea man was five over after nine holes but with a superb back nine in which he dropped only one other shot, he was fully deserving of his award.
Shea Brady engineered a first prize in the 0-12 Category. The 7-handicapper with a nett 67 edged Ronan O'Reilly into second place with a nett 68 - a double bogey six at the last hole ultimately proviing decisive.
Gerard O'Callaghan is becoming a regular face among the prize winners and with a nett 66 picked up first prize in the 13-18 handicap category. Andrew Clarke's 68 and better back nine took the runners up prize.
And Gary Baird shot an excellent nett 69 to win the 19-28 handicap category. His better back nine left Brendan Lynch to pick up the runners up prize.
John Maguire was fully deserving of the Best Gross prize with a gross 72.

Kevin kicks off with April Medal win
If you're going to win, win convincingly! That would certainly seem to be the motto of Kevin Boyd who won the April Medal at County Armagh by an amazing four clear shots.
The 24-handicapper readily admits he could do nothing wrong during his competition round, and with a nett 63 score deservedly walked away with the coveted prize and automatic qualification for the Club Championship later in the year.
Kevin was five over after nine holes and despite a flurry of double bogeys on the back nine, he was still seven shots short of using his 21 handicap, recording a final score nett 63.
Ian O'Hea was his nearest challenger, four shots adrift, returning a nett 67. But the 15-handicapper might well have given Kevin a run for his money had he not double bogeyed 14 and triple-bogeyed 17.
Michael McGuirks' five-over back nine for a final score nett 68, was enough on countback to secure him first prize in the 0-12 handicap category. Alan Wilson, similarly a 12-handicapper, was runner up with a nett 68 - his double bogey six at thde 16th ultimately costing him.
In the 13-18 handicap category Derek McKeever was kicking of a winning week-end with a nett 68. After 10 holes he'd used 11 shots of his 15 handicap but produced a very steady run-in to record that excellent score which pushed Steven Millar - also returing nett 68 - into runners up spot.
Eamon Toner picked up first prize in the 19-28 handicap category with a nett 69 - his better back nine ensuring PG McNabb Trophy winner Gerry Doyle was only going to collect second prize on this occasion.
Conor McGurgan's produced the Best Gross 72 which proved the best of the week-end.

Instructor Pat drives to Hirsh Cup win
DRIVING instructor Pat McKenna hit the winning road to lift one of County Armagh Golf Club's oldest trophies - the Hirsh Cup.
The 16-handicapper returned the top score nett 66 in the netstretch ltd sponsored competition.
Despite a bumpy start, with a double bogey at the first hole, Pat found crusie control for a steady front nine over which he dropped only a further two shots. He dropped a further shot at the 10th and it looked as if the wheels had come off when he triple-bogeyed 15 and double bogeyed 16. However, after some urgent repairs he steered to an an eight over back nine and a winning score of nett 66.
Paul Corvan's card with a nett 67, somewhat mirrored Pat's - four over after nine but double bogeys at 15 and 17 signalled the 12-handicapper's downfall.
Six-handicapper Paul Doyle would surely have been taking a bow once again from the winners podium had he not double bogeyed the final hole in his round which included two bridie 2s at the 7th and 13th holes. But he'll have been more than happy to pick up first prize in the 0-12 handicap category with his nett 68. Nigel McMahon was just a further shot behind on nett 69 - steady golf throughout earning him second prize on countback.
Derek McKeever, despite a handicap cut the previous day in the April Medal competition, took first prize in the 13-18 handicap category with a nett 68 - two double bogeys at the final two holes ultimately costing him very dearly. Stephen Maloney's net 69 deservedly earned him second prize in the category.
And fire-fighter Michael Calvert blazed a trail to first prize in Category 3 with a nett 74 - his back nine just squeezing out Tom Donnelly who returned a similar nett 74.
Best gross score 73 delighted 4-handicapper Neill Cromwell no end, and especially after a triple bogey eight at the 10th hole. He masterminded a superb recovery however, with a birdie 2 at the 11th hole and an eagle 3 at the par five 12th hole the highlights of a one-over par back nine.
