Kevin kicks off with April Medal win

If you're going to win, win convincingly! That would certainly seem to be the motto of Kevin Boyd who won the April Medal at County Armagh by an amazing four clear shots.

The 24-handicapper readily admits he could do nothing wrong during his competition round, and with a nett 63 score deservedly walked away with the coveted prize and automatic qualification for the Club Championship later in the year.

Kevin was five over after nine holes and despite a flurry of double bogeys on the back nine, he was still seven shots short of using his 21 handicap, recording a final score nett 63.

Ian O'Hea was his nearest challenger, four shots adrift, returning a nett 67. But the 15-handicapper might well have given Kevin a run for his money had he not double bogeyed 14 and triple-bogeyed 17.

Michael McGuirks' five-over back nine for a final score nett 68, was enough on countback to secure him first prize in the 0-12 handicap category. Alan Wilson, similarly a 12-handicapper, was runner up with a nett 68 - his double bogey six at thde 16th ultimately costing him.

In the 13-18 handicap category Derek McKeever was kicking of a winning week-end with a nett 68. After 10 holes he'd used 11 shots of his 15 handicap but produced a very steady run-in to record that excellent score which pushed Steven Millar - also returing nett 68 - into runners up spot.

Eamon Toner picked up first prize in the 19-28 handicap category with a nett 69 - his better back nine ensuring PG McNabb Trophy winner Gerry Doyle was only going to collect second prize on this occasion.

Conor McGurgan's produced the Best Gross 72 which proved the best of the week-end.
