Big Derek's no longer the bridesmaid!

Big Derek McKeever may well have been thinking this golfing season was going to one of 'always the bridesmaid and never the bride'.

But that all changed with a superb round of golf which saw him lift the County Armagh Golf Club's Bumble Bee Cup.

In consecutive competitions the previous weekend, 14-handicapper Derek produced scores which just edged him into runners up spot. But there was no-one to touch him when he returned an impressive nett 64 score in the Bumble Bee Cup competition.

Birdies at the second and seventh holes saw him on his way to one-over for the front nine holes. By the time he had completed 14 he had dropped only one other shot. But then came a nervous finish with shots dropped at the remaining four holes, including a triple bogey at 18.

However, he had done enough to secure victory ahead of 11-handicapper Lee Stewart whose impressive nett 65 earned him the runners up prize. The Killylea man was five over after nine holes but with a superb back nine in which he dropped only one other shot, he was fully deserving of his award.

Shea Brady engineered a first prize in the 0-12 Category. The 7-handicapper with a nett 67 edged Ronan O'Reilly into second place with a nett 68 - a double bogey six at the last hole ultimately proviing decisive.

Gerard O'Callaghan is becoming a regular face among the prize winners and with a nett 66 picked up first prize in the 13-18 handicap category. Andrew Clarke's 68 and better back nine took the runners up prize.

And Gary Baird shot an excellent nett 69 to win the 19-28 handicap category. His better back nine left Brendan Lynch to pick up the runners up prize.

John Maguire was fully deserving of the Best Gross prize with a gross 72.
