Neil chips in for Allen Cup win
EXUDING all the confidence of a golfer in top form, Neill Cromwell reached for his wedge at the edge of the 17th green and chipped in for a superb birdie 3. It was a shot which ultimately clinched the Allen Cup, sponsored by JR McMahon, Armagh.
Lesser mortals would have taken up their putter for the shot, but Neil, who plays off a handicap of 3 and has produced gross scores of 70,69 and 69 in the previous three week's club competitions, delivered the deftess of chips to trickle his ball the 12 feet downhill and into the hole. A par at the final hole secured a nett 66, (gross 69).
Stephen Maloney produced a similar superb nett 66, but on countback it was that birdie at 17 which clinched the coveted trophy for Cromwell - unbelievably only his third piece of silverware in the last 18 years.
It must be said also, these two remarkable scores were also achieved in less than favourable conditions - heavy showers and blustery winds playing havoc throughout the day.
Cromwell however, relished the challenge. He was one under after four holes with a birdie 3 at the long par four 4th. But surprisingly par three holes ruined an otherwise perfect outward trek - he bogeyed both the 7th and 9th holes.
A birde four at the 12th and then that birdie three at 17 however, saw him two under par for the back nine and one under par for his round, producing a nett 66.
Stephen Maloney's round was somewhat contrasting, conceding the majority of his shots across the back nine holes after shooting just a 2-over par front nine.
Brian Loney was the next best home and deservedly took the 0-12 handicap category first prize with a nett 67. Two shots adrift on nett 69 was Mark Shannon, who will have been especially pleased with a one-over par back nine.
Ronan McWilliams proved a model of consistency for a nett 67 finish taking the 13-18-handicap category ahead of Danny McGee on nett 68.
And Gerry Kelly's nett 72 won the 19-28 handicap category with Charlie Johnston just a shot behind on nett 73.
Neil Cromwell is presented with the Allen Cup by Brian Graham from JR McMahon, Armagh, who sponsored the recent stroke competition at County Armagh Golf Club. Included also are (from left) Club Captain John Flack and category prize winners Gerry Kelly, Brian Loney, Stephen Maloney and Danny McGee

Lee's birdie finish is no 'Conn'
LEE Stewart's birdie three at the final hole proved the difference when three players tied for the top prize in the Noel Conn and Company sponsored Stableford at County Armagh.
The Killylea man's 42 points was matched by Caolan Doyle and Philip Kelly. But competitions convenor Paddy Burns calculations eventually separated them and ultimately it was Stewart's birdie which won the day ahead of Doyle and Kelly respectively.
Stewart, playing off 10, recorded three birdies in all - at the par four 4th, the par five 12th and the par four 18th holes during a round which saw him rack up 20 points by the half way stage and add a further 22 over the back nine holes.
Caolan Doyle was a model of consistency with 21 points front and back nine. But he will have been sorely disappointed not to have taken the top prize after a 'no socre' at the par three 11th hole.
Philip Kelly recorded one the best front nine scores of the day - 22 points - and with a further 20 added from his homeward trek was deserving of his first prize in the 0-12 handicap Category where Ian Miller's 41 points earned him the runner's up prize.
Club Honorary Secretary Damien Murrray won the 13-18 handicap category with 41 points, and one point behind him Gerry Kelly deservedly picked up runner's up with 40points.
It took a further countback to separate 38 pointers' Brendan McKinney and Ian Ritchie in the 19-28 handicap category with McKinney getting the nod on this occasion.
The Gross Prize went to Neil Cromwell (37pts).

Age no barrier for Open Winner Roy
ROY Turner may have just recently picked up his penioner's bus pass, but after winning the Cross Group sponored Open Stableford at County Armagh he reminded all those of a lesser age, he hasn't lost his winning ways.
Roy was two points better than all the rest in the Saturday event which welcomed visitors from far and wide. 42 points was the winning score amassed by Roy in a fourball which also included a Gross prize winner James Johnston.
23 points were chalked up over the first nine holes with a birdie 2 at the 7th hole to highlight a one-over par outward trek. He bagged another birdie at the par-five 12th hole and skilfully managed the five remaining holes to add a further 19 points to his front-nine tally for a final and winning total of 42 points.
Dublin golfer Darragh McCusker, playing off 15, in contrast, chalked up 23 points over the back nine holes. And with 17 from the front nine deservedly took home the runner's up prize.
Portadown Golf Club member Neil Aston was the first of three golfers returning scores of 39 points. His better back nine beat Conor Woods, who recorded five birdies on the day, and Art McCrory, respectively.
Gary McCourt banked sixth with 38 points and Andrew Allen brought up the rear with a similar 38 points losing out to Gary on a back nine countback.
The top Gross Score of the day was produced by John Magire (35pts) with James Johnston runner up (32pts).
