A large turnout of ladies competed for the prestigious McAnerney cup, an open competition played annually with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer. The day began with a very successful coffee morning for Newry Hospice hosted by the McAnerney family.
Kathleen Mallon returned the best score on the day with thirty eight stableford points to lift the cup. Hot on her heels was Ann McDonald just a point back, and Una Cullinane's thirty six points was enough for third place. The best gross belonged to June Humphries while the front nine was Barbara Hamilton's twenty one points and Fionnuala Quinn won the back nine with twenty points.
The category winners were as follows: (A) Bernie Rice 35 points, (B) Gail Steed 35 points, (C) Carmel Cassidy 35 points, (D) Cait Murray 31 points. The Visitor's prize was won by S Rankin from Donaghadee Golf Club. Nearest the pin on the seventh hole was Barbara Hamilton while the longest drive on the seventeenth hole was achieved by Catherine Corrigan.
In a packed clubhouse on Thursday night the Lady Captain Hilary welcomed the ladies and the McAnerney family. Paula Conroy on behalf of the family thanked the ladies for their generosity to the two charities. She said they were delighted to sponsor the competition and looked forward to next year. She thanked the golf club for their support and the use of the clubhouse.

Fairlawns prize is just reward for Noel's fair day's work
Noel Murtagh was the popular winner of the Fairlawns Residential sponsored stableford at County Armagh.
The 12-handicapper signed for 43 points to win the competition prize which was presented by Fairlawns' Clare Cassidy at the clubhouse on Saturday evening.
Opening his round with three pars, Noel's steady scoring saw him chalk up 21 points by the turn. Back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 got him off the a similar excellent start to the back nine which yielded a further 22 points for that winning 43 total.
Robert Fagan was runner up with 41 points, his better back nine score taking the prize ahead of James Johnston, Patrick McElmeel, John Sheehan and Noel Muldoon who all returned 41points also. But it could so easily have been Robert's name in lights had he not failed to score at not one, or two but three holes!
James Johnston's 41 points earned him the 0-12 handicap category first prize, two points ahead of runner up Shea Smyth who got off to the best possible start with a birdie three on his way to 39 points.
Patrick McElmeel won the 13-18 handicap category with 41 points and that after failing to score at the 6th hole. But his better back nine pushed John Sheehan into runners up position after he too carded 41 points.
Noel Muldoon was the other 41 pointer and deservedly picked up first prize in the 19-28 handicap category, three points better than runner up Paul Kelly.
And once again it was Jarleth McReynolds who collected the prize for the day's best gross score, 37points.

County Armagh says thank-you to club sponors
County Armagh Golf Club Captains' John Flack and Hilary Johnston paid tribute to the club's many sponsors for their support during the past year.
Numerous local companies and businesses who sponsor club competitions were represented on Sponsors Day, and both the Mens' and Ladies Captain's took the opportunity to say a big thank-you to them all.
Rollins Insurance Brokers provided the financial support the now annual event which includes a stableford competition before an evening of fine dining by the club's Green Room Restaurant and entertainment.
As ever the prizes were eagerly contested, and with the course in excellent condition, impressive scoring was essential to secure a prize.
Damien Smyth from Complete Living Solutions produced the day's best score - 41 points - for the top prize. Young Barry Scully representing Rices Supermarket Ltd, was runner up with 40 points and Ted Atkinson representing Ol Flowers took third prize with 39 points. Jeff Tosh from Armagh City Hotel and Tim Taylor, representing WD Irwin & Sons, both scored 37 points wand took 4th and 5th prizes respectively on countback.
Anne Attwell, representing McKinney Timber Products, was the top lady scorer on the day with 35 points, narrowly winning ahead of Ronnie Toal who also returned 35pts. Past Lady Captain Paula McCrory, representing Sterling House, picked up third with 34 points and also the prize for nearest the pin. Kathleen Mallon was fourth and Anne McDonald 5th.
The prize for the Longest Drive was won by Johnny Brown, representing Armagh Potato Co Ltd.

The past lady captains of County Armagh Golf Club got together a few months ago to organise a club classic for the ladies branch. A lot of hard work went into the organising of this event and it was decided to have a four ball classic with two scores counting on all holes except the 6 th the 12 th and the 18 th when three scores would count. Just to make it more interesting each team was asked to play a yellow ball and there was a prize for the team with the best score for the yellow ball.
Over 70 ladies played for the fantastic array of prizes which were sourced by the following people including current club members. Raymond Donnelly from Donnelly Motors got a fourball in Concra Wood. Ann Conlon got a fourball in Rossapenna. The Slieve Russell fourball was secured by Ann Mone and Hilary Johnston got a fourball from The Heritage and Kilkeel. On behalf of the ladies branch I would like to thank the above people for their willingness to help out.
The following prize winners will be going to play on these wonderful courses. The top team on the day with 73 points was Hilary Johnston, Moya Brady, Anne McDonald and Carmel Cassidy who go to Kilkeel. Runner up with 70 points was Paula McCrory, Fionnuala Quinn, Lorraine Megaw and Rea Haughey who go to the Heritage. Third place was Barbara Gartland's team of Teresa McVeigh, Valerie Gordon, Sheila Hughes and Toni McManus with 69 who are off to the Slieve Russell. Fourth place was the team captained by Flo McCall, Joy Steenson, Lilly McMullan and Gillian Poole who are playing in Concra Wood. The Yellow ball competition was collected by June Humpheries team with Ellen Brady Mary Black and Gail Steed and they are off to the North West to play Rossapenna.
In a packed clubhouse on Wednesday night one of the past Lady Captains Sadie Scott, who was captain in 1976, was asked to present the prizes to the various winners. Sadie received a very warm reception from the ladies and presented the prizes to the winners.

A three ball scramble was organised by the ladies branch on Thursday last. The weather conditions were very showery and not many teams completed their round in dry conditions. Nevertheless the scores were very good in the wet conditions. This competition is very generously sponsored annually by Hairlines Hairdressers on Dobbin Street.
The mother and daughter combination of Elizabeth and Alexandra Mawhinney and Gail Steed were the top team on the day and returned a fantastic score of 65.7 shots. Runner up with 66.5 was Flo McCall Joy Steenson and June Humpheries and third place went to the team of Paula McCrory Anne McDonald and Carmel Cassidy with 66.7. The Lady Captain Hilary Johnston presented the prizes to the various winners and Elizabeth on behalf of the winning team thanked Deirdre from Hairlines for her continuing sponsorship and support of the ladies branch.
