Pat's top of the class in new Captain's role
PAT McAleavey is County Armagh Golf Club's new Captain. The retired Keady High School Principal was officially appointed to the post on New Year's Day. Members and friends packed the city clubhouse for the inauguration ceremony where Past Captain John Flack presented Pat with his new Captain's blazer.
Pat has been a member of County Armagh Golf Club for the past 15 years and has served as House Convenor on Council. He was Vice Captain to John Flack throughout 2013 and chairs the recently appointed Savings Committee.As a playing member the former Rock Road man has represented the club on various teams including Junior Cowdy, Ulster Fourball Joe Carr and Sam Rutherford. Today however, he is more relaxed in his ambitions and enjoys the company of colleagues in club competitions as well as playing with his wife Colette in the various mixed events at the city course.
Speaking at the Captain's inauguration, Pat said: "It is both a privilege and honour to be Captain of County Armagh Golf Club. I can honestly say aspirations to captaincy of this great club never entered my mind when I first joined many years ago. "County Armagh Golf Club has many dynamic members, men and women, and together we can face the many challenges that lie ahead. It is my hope that I can also help to raise the quality of the experience for members as well as raising the profile of this great club in the local community."
Pat has selected Bessbrook man Richard Black to be his Vice Captain for the year ahead. Paddy Burns, as the new Honorary Secretary, will also assist the new Captain during his tenure.
Meanwhile, the Captain's Inaugural 9-hole stableford competition played on New Year's Day was won by Kenny Richardson with a winning score of 22points.
The good Doctor is new President of County Armagh Golf Club
Doctor Oliver Woods is the new President of County Armagh Golf Club.
The retired city practitioner was inaugurated to the office on New Year's Day. He will hold the post for two years.
Past President Jack Moore presented Dr Woods with his new President's blazer in front of a packed clubhouse of members who gathered to join in the special celebrations.
The Woods family, who reside in the city, have long been associated with County Armagh Golf Club. Dr Woods' father Dr John was Captain in 1930 and his mother Dr Sheelagh was Lady Captain in 1937. Following in their footsteps, Dr Oliver was Captain the Club in 1968 and his wife Cecilia Lady Captain in 2000.
In his 60-plus years as a member, Dr Woods has represented the club on various teams including Senior Cowdy and Carlingford Cup Teams and most recently the Septuagenarian Trophy winning team. Among the many accolades recorded during his playing career is the honour of being the youngest ever winner of the Captain's Prize at the the young age of 17.
Speaking at his inauguration, Dr Woods said: "I am greatly honoured to be appointed President of County Armagh Golf Club, particularly following the many illustrious men who have gone before.
"Jack Moore will be a hard act to follow but I am looking forward to continuing his good work and supporting our Club Captain and Council during my time in office."
