Their combined ages may total close to 300 years, but the competitive edge of four County Armagh golfers is still very much evident.

The ‘famous four' - Denis Hughes, Dr Oliver Woods, Jim Woods and Jimmy Hughes – recently secured the Septuagenarian Trophy which is played for annually by golfers aged over 70.

County Armagh, along with Greenore, Kilkeel, Warrenpoint, Lisburn, Edenmore, Lurgan, Mourne, Ardee and Mannan Castle golf clubs take part in the competition which was launched by Brownlow McLean from Mourne Golf Club in 2002.

And for the first time ever the coveted trophy has been won by County Armagh.

“Home advantage may have played a part in the end result,” smiled Jack Moore, President of County Armagh and Team Manager. “But we are delighted to have our name engraved on this magnificent trophy.”

Kilkeel, and Warrenpoint have each won the Septuagenarian Trophy on three occasions, but it was Greenore, twice winners, who were County Armagh's nearest challengers on the day of the competition.

County Armagh Golf Club Captain John Flack led the congratulations. “This is a magnificent achievement by the club's ‘elder statesmen',” he said. “To win any trophy which brings honour to your club is always to be applauded, but to win such a coveted trophy at the age of 70-plus years is even more special.”
