Brian's on fire for stableford win
WORLD Fire and Police Games competitor Brian McGuigan extinguished the rest of the field by producing the winning score in County Armagh's recent Sunday stableford.
His 42 stableford points saw him take top spot on the podium ahead of Paul Doyle who finished just a point behind on 41. A back-nine which included two birdies and yeilded 22 points topped a steady front nine and 20 points for victory.
Teenager Stewart Hall led home the Category winners, his 40 points winning the 0-12 handcap ahead of Gervase Hughes on 39 points.
Danny Maxwell was the outright winner of the 13-18 handicap section with 40 points also, with Eamon McVeigh two shots adrift on 38 points, taking runner up after a back nine countback.
Kieran McAuley won the 19--28 handicap category with 38 points, but had Henry Lyttle not failed to score at the 17th and not double-bogeyed the last, it could have been a very different story. Henry however, will be happy just to have collected a prize.

Stroke victory not without pain for Liam
LIAM Ross will next year play of a handicap considerably less than that which he completed this year after winning County Armagh's final white marker stroke competition of the season.
The affable Liam signed for a nett 62 for his two shot win ahead of Harold Price who returned to his winning ways with a nett 64.
Kieran Mullan picked up third prize with a nett 65 ahead of the final three who all returned nett 67 scores. Jerome Leer's better back nine saw him home in front of Conor McGurgan whose better back nine proved that little bit better than that of Davy Spratt who picked up the sixth and final prize.

Record breaker Andrew is club champion
ANDREW Millar's Club Championship winning score has County Armagh officials delving through the history books in the hope of confirming the Killylea man's nett 130 is a club record for the two-day competition.
Superb back-to-back nett 65 scores earned the young painter and decorator the coveted title in the championship which this year took on a new format. It was a winning score by an amazing five shots from runner up Jarleth McReynolds who many had tipped to win it.
Points accumulated from the club's six monthly medals plus a selection of the top stroke competitions throughout the season, determined the top 20 players who would contest the club championship this year.
Millar qualified with considerable ease and after match-day one of the championship he shared top spot on the leaderboard with McReynolds, both returning nett 65 scores.
He continued that superb form on matchday two getting his round off to a magnificent start with three birdies from the first four holes. He dropped shots at the 7th and 8th holes but a further birdie at the 9th hole saw him two under at the turn.
Four pars followed and stood him in good stead for the difficult fiinish, and although he dropped three shots over the next three holes, a birdie and par finish secured him that second successive nett 65 score.
Jarleth McReynolds, playing of a handicap of one, knew only too well the task which faced him after day one, and he battled bravely a week later for a one over par front nine and level par back nine for his nett 70 and 135 total.
Third placed Jimmy Wilson was well within reach of Millar after day one also when he signed for a nett 68, and he repeated the dose on day two for his 136 total which earned him third prize.
John Maguire finished a shot ahead of Wilson on day one with a nett 67 but could manage only a nett 70 in his follow-up round for his 137 total taking fourth prize.
And Stewart Hall, the youngster in the pack, shot 68 and 70 for an equally impressive 138 total which claimed the penultimate prize ahead of John Lavery who signed for a 69 and 70, 139 total.

Michael's birdie delight secures September Medal
Michael Cullen saved his best round of the season for the last medal competition of the year at County Armagh, and his winning score nett 60 was simply untouchable.
The 11-handicapper was a four shot winner after a superb round which included no less than five birdies. After nine holes, Michael was just three over par, but when he birdied three of the next five holes and went on to finish with a birdie also, there was no catching him.
Competitions Convenor Paddy Burns was his closest challenger with a very impressive nett 64 winning on countback from Jim McKeown and Brendan McKinney who also returned nett 64s, but they paled into insignificance against Cullen's brilliant nett 60.
Another 11-handicapper, Kieran Campbell, led home the category scores, his nett 65 winning the 0-12 handicap group with Michael McGuirk runner up and no doubt rueing a triple bogey seven at the 5th hole.
Jim McKeown's nett 64 earned him the top prize in the 13-18 handicap category with Jonathan Black runner up with a nett 65.
And in the 19-28 handicap category it was Brendan McKinney who topped the scoreboard with his nett 64, seven shots better than the next placed Anthony Fagan on nett 71.
Jarleth McReynolds produced the best gross score of the day - 68.
County Armagh Golf Club Vice Captain Pat McAleavey presents Michael Cullen with his Medal after winning the September Medal competition.
Included also are category winners Paddy Burns, Anthony Fagan, Jarleth McReynolds and Jim McKeown

A large turnout of ladies competed for the prestigious McAnerney cup, an open competition played annually with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer. The day began with a very successful coffee morning for Newry Hospice hosted by the McAnerney family.
Kathleen Mallon returned the best score on the day with thirty eight stableford points to lift the cup. Hot on her heels was Ann McDonald just a point back, and Una Cullinane's thirty six points was enough for third place. The best gross belonged to June Humphries while the front nine was Barbara Hamilton's twenty one points and Fionnuala Quinn won the back nine with twenty points.
The category winners were as follows: (A) Bernie Rice 35 points, (B) Gail Steed 35 points, (C) Carmel Cassidy 35 points, (D) Cait Murray 31 points. The Visitor's prize was won by S Rankin from Donaghadee Golf Club. In a packed clubhouse on Thursday night the Lady Captain Hilary welcomed the ladies and the McAnerney family. Paula Conroy on behalf of the family thanked the ladies for their generosity to the two charities. She said they were delighted to sponsor the competition and looked forward to next year. Fairlawns prize is just reward for Noel's fair day's work
Noel Murtagh was the popular winner of the Fairlawns Residential sponsored stableford at County Armagh.
The 12-handicapper signed for 43 points to win the competition prize which was presented by Fairlawns' Clare Cassidy at the clubhouse on Saturday evening.
Opening his round with three pars, Noel's steady scoring saw him chalk up 21 points by the turn. Back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 got him off the a similar excellent start to the back nine which yielded a further 22 points for that winning 43 total.
Robert Fagan was runner up with 41 points, his better back nine score taking the prize ahead of James Johnston, Patrick McElmeel, John Sheehan and Noel Muldoon who all returned 41points also. But it could so easily have been Robert's name in lights had he not failed to score at not one, or two but three holes!
James Johnston's 41 points earned him the 0-12 handicap category first prize, two points ahead of runner up Shea Smyth who got off to the best possible start with a birdie three on his way to 39 points.
Patrick McElmeel won the 13-18 handicap category with 41 points and that after failing to score at the 6th hole. But his better back nine pushed John Sheehan into runners up position after he too carded 41 points.
Noel Muldoon was the other 41 pointer and deservedly picked up first prize in the 19-28 handicap category, three points better than runner up Paul Kelly.
And once again it was Jarleth McReynolds who collected the prize for the day's best gross score, 37points.
