GARY'S GERRY LENAGH TRIUMPH WRAPS UP EVENTFUL OPEN WEEK

County Armagh Golf Club's 2017 Open Week concluded on 19 August with Gary McAleavey lifting the Gerry Lenagh Memorial Trophy after victory in a tournament often regarded as one of the ‘majors' in the club's calendar.

On a blustery Saturday when a damp course yielded little run, scoring among the 202 contenders in the stableford event sponsored by Morgan McLernon Transport Distribution was slightly more conservative than usual, if no less impressive. Gary's hard-fought 40-point winning tally was aided by a useful haul of five homeward pars, which proved decisive in seeing off on a break of tie the significant challenge of his older brother Pat, who captured the runner-up award with a terrific 40-point return of his own.

Honorary Treasurer Pat can reflect with pride on a seven-par showing that clips his handicap from 17 to 16. And, while one can only guess as to the extent of this sibling rivalry, he surely couldn't have chosen a better man to lose out to! For his part, Gary's classy Gerry Lenagh success is merely the latest in a glorious season in which he has also secured both the May Medal and a massive nine-shot handicap reduction.

Oh brother! Gary McAleavey pipped Pat to the Gerry Lenagh top prize on a break of tie.

John Vernon tends to reserve his very best golf for Sunday competitions, but an outstanding gross 75 consisting of 13 pars and five bogeys showed that he can do it on a Saturday too; he came 3rd with 39 points. Thirty-eight points was a popular score as those in 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places all recorded that total. Bagging 4th prize was Niall McGeown, who birdied the 17th and registered five pars elsewhere, and in-form Adam Cromwell followed up his midweek success — more of which later — with four birdies and a 5th-place finish.

An excellent outing featuring birdies at the 3rd and 6th clinched 6th position for former Club Captain Richard Black, while Lee Campbell crept into 7th with a wonderful gross 73 to match Adam's. The prolific Jarlath McReynolds particularly enjoyed the penultimate holes of each nine, eagling the 8th and birdieing the 17th in a one-over-par round that represented the day's lowest gross. Stewart Stevenson was one shot back in the gross pecking order with a characteristically assured 71.

TRAYNOR THE TOP MAN IN AUGUST MEDAL

As the qualifying season at County Armagh Golf Club gallops to its autumnal conclusion with dispiriting rapidness, the penultimate Medal of 2017 was competed for on 6 August. And emerging victorious from a 96-strong field in this Gerard Byrne Tyres-sponsored event was Paul Traynor with a tremendous nett 66.

It's often said that damage limitation at certain tricky junctures is key to any successful round of golf and, crucially, Paul recorded just one double bogey — at the 3rd — in his admirably steady Sunday showing. Half a dozen pars at the 4th, 9th, 10th, 12th and, most impressively, 18th added the gloss to an excellent gross 83 that secured for Traynor both the much-sought-after monthly silverware and a new handicap of 16.

Paul Traynor is presented with the County Armagh Golf Club August Medal by competition sponsor Gerard Byrne, proprietor of Gerard Byrne Tyres. Also pictured are Club Captain Richard Stewart and other prizewinners (L-R) Oliver Connell, Norman Mallon, Derick Hynes and Caolan Doyle.

ASTONISHING HOLE-IN-ONE DOUBLE FOR ROONEY

'Golf Digest' magazine estimates the odds of an average amateur golfer having two holes-in-one in the same round to be 162 million to 1, so what an absolutely incredible feat it was for our very own Joe Rooney to ace both the 3rd and 7th holes on Tuesday 15 August!

Playing in the Open Stroke event sponsored by Holmes and Doran Building Surveyors, the 16-year-old drew a 9-iron onto the 3rd green and watched in delight as the ball spun 12 feet left and into the cup.

Then, to the utter amazement of his playing partners, fellow prodigious talents Lee Campbell and Philip Kelly, he nailed a pitching-wedge at the Quarry that took one bounce before smacking the bottom of the pin and nestling in the hole.

Rooney would eventually finish his round on three under par to scoop the gross prize in a tournament won by Adam Cromwell, who carded an outstanding gross 69 of his own for a nett 64. (A full competition report will follow).

Many congratulations to Joe on this staggering achievement ... surely one of the most remarkable in the storied history of County Armagh Golf Club.

Tune in to BBC Radio Ulster between 9am and 9.30am on Thursday to hear County Armagh's hole-in-one king chatting about his recent antics.

Club Stroke Competition – 10th August 2017

The ladies who participated in the August Club Stroke competition enjoyed beautiful warm sunny weather and played on a course in peek condition. The competition was sponsored by Seven Hills restaurant. Lady Captain Gail expressed sincere thanks to Shauna and Ciara for their generous sponsorship and thanked them for the excellent service that they provide to the Ladies Branch each week and particularly on Lady Captain's Day.

The beautiful playing conditions were reflected in the impressive scores posted by those who featured in the winner's enclosure. The winner of the Club Stroke with an outstanding score of nett 67 was Colette McSorley . A delighted Colette graciously accepted her prize and in her speech thanked her playing partner Aidenne and the sponsors. Second place went to Bernie Rice with a nett 68, narrowly beating Catherine McAnerney who also returned a nett 68. Ellen Brady won the gross prize with an excellent score of 78.
