A level-par round warrants victory in most competitions, and Stewart Stevenson's superb 70-stroke performance earned exactly that in the stableford event at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday 25 June.
The three-handicapper's early endeavours meandered rather tamely, as bogeys at the 1st and 3rd and pars elsewhere left him two over par after seven holes. However, Stewart burst into life at that point, firing birdies at the 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th.
That majestic birdie blitz was checked only slightly by dropped shots at the 9th and 16th before the Senior Cup and Senior Cowdy stalwart closed with two serene pars to complete his 39-point prevailing tally.
Thread the needle: County Armagh's 5th hole, The Gap.
Derek Lyttle enjoyed a hat-trick of back-to-back par sequences on his way to an excellent 38-point salvo that granted him second spot overall. The 15-handicapper's outing was defined by its solidity, comprising as it did seven pars, nine bogeys and just two double bogeys.
With Cemetery Sunday, club team commitments and perhaps even the excesses of the previous night's Captain's Day celebrations combining to reduce playing numbers, prizes were awarded only to Stevenson, Lyttle and the winner of each category.
Birdies at the 2nd, the 12th and, brilliantly, the 16th helped 37-point Brian McGuigan to land the spoils in category 1. In what was very much a mixed bag of a gross 78, four double bogeys prevented Brian from worrying the leaders with a much heftier total.
With wife Phil and son Paul having secured Captain's Day honours 24 hours earlier, the pressure was on Conlon Rice to prove his golfing worth. And the wily 17-handicapper was not to be found wanting, as he topped the category 2 standings with a remarkably tranquil 38-point scorecard showing three pars and 15 bogeys.
The category 3 plaudits went to Gerry Doyle, who parred three holes in a row between the 11th and 13th while amassing a fine 37-point return.
Meanwhile, Martin Gill, a prolific Wednesday winner ever since the midweek Open competitions began two years ago, was at it again on 28 June with a terrific gross 73 for 38 points. On the same day, visitor Leslie Addis topped the senior standings with an impressive 40 points.
