DAN'S THE MAN IN TRANSPORT STABLEFORD

A stableford event at County Armagh Golf Club on 8 July was sponsored by McAnenly Transport Ltd and witnessed Danny Maxwell cruise to an emphatic three-point victory.

Danny motored along quite beautifully throughout his round, neatly completing both nines in 43 strokes to amass an unbeatable stableford tally of 43 points. This virtuoso performance was helped by half-a-dozen pars and, in addition to topping the Sunday standings, Maxwell sealed a three-shot handicap reduction.

Next to Danny and securing the overall runner-up spot was Lee Stewart, who fired no fewer than five birdies on his way to an exhilarating gross 72. The accruing 40 points earned the talented Killylea player a new handicap of five.

ULSTER CUP SEMI-FINALS AWAIT COUNTY ARMAGH

Greenisland. Portstewart. Ashfield. Ballybofey. Cloverhill can now be added to the list of clubs that have been unable to live with County Armagh during the club's thrilling run to the last four of the 2018 Ulster Cup.

The quarter-final first leg was contested in Cloverhill on Monday 23 July, for which captain Marty Daly made one change by drafting in the experienced Anthony Hillen.

Having most recently seen off Cloverhill, County Armagh now face an Ulster Cup semi-final against either Royal Belfast or Malone.

In a tense encounter in South Armagh, Cormac O'Hare and Paul Corvan turned in brilliant displays to put two points on the board before, in the fading evening light, skipper Daly illuminated proceedings with a birdie at the 18th to notch another.

Margaret Deane Mixed Greensomes

The annual Margaret Deane Mixed Greensomes competition took place on Friday 20 th July. The competition was sponsored by Noel Conn & Co Accountants .

At the prizegiving in the clubhouse, the Lady Captain Elizabeth Mawhinney expressed her sincere thanks for the continued generous support which Noel has given to the Ladies branch. Elizabeth explained the competition had originally been in foursomes format but is now played as greensomes. Margaret Deane had been an honorary secretary in the club and following her passing the club donated the beautiful trophy in her honour and selected her chosen charity the RNLI as the beneficiary of the event.

Emma is winner of July Medal

The warm sunny conditions which have prevailed during recent weeks held for the 46 ladies who competed for the July Medal. Lady Captain Elizabeth was delighted with the large number of ladies who competed and attended prize giving despite it being holiday time and a stroke competition.

Elizabeth welcomed Mrs Flo McCall in her capacity as representative of the Southern Area Hospice to receive a cheque for £1,905. Flo expressed her delight and appreciation of the amazing amount of money raised by Elizabeth on her recent Lady Captain's day. She explained that the Newry hospice which first opened in 1989 provides vital services to over one thousand families and that this could not be done without the support of local communities and their fund-raising activities.

The course was in superb condition, with fast running greens making scoring difficult. However, the very much in form Emma Garrigan found no such difficulty however, returning an excellent nett 65 to win by 4 shots from Siobhan Donnelly, in second place.

CALUM DONS HIS SUNDAY BEST

With England at one stage looking to be on the verge of World Cup glory in Russia, and our last drop of rain seemingly having fallen way back in 1966, it has felt at times recently as though we are living in some sort of parallel universe. County Armagh Golf Club has at least attempted to retain a small grip on normality in these heady last few weeks, though, with the completion of some refreshingly sane and workaday events that have since been ticked off its 2018 fixture list.

While the Three Lions have actually now racked up 52 years of hurt, Calum Connell rarely has to endure more than 10 days of hurt, such is the remarkable regularity with which he features among the prizes at CAGC. The talented schoolboy's latest winning display arrived on Sunday 1 July, when he topped the pile in a Club Stableford competition. Calum's superb gross 73 incorporated birdies at the 12th and 15th and, most pleasingly, represented the lowest round of his embryonic career.

The massive 41 points that it yielded also left young Connell a full five strokes ahead of the chasing pack. That group was headed up by overall runner-up, Bill Knipe, who birdied the 4th and reeled off three consecutive back-nine pars on his way to a fine 36-point return.
