The vast majority of members at County Armagh Golf Club would bite your hand off to shoot a gross 68 once in a lifetime. Stewart Stevenson, however, was unwilling to settle for that even as the high point of a single playing weekend because, after posting that awesome number in the Open competition on 4 August, he went lower again 24 hours later. Golfing gluttony is a terrible vice.
In the Club Stableford event on 5 August, Stevenson responded to an opening bogey by firing birdies at the 2nd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th and 13th and dropping only one further shot. The winning Sunday scorecard showed a three-under par front nine and a one-under-par homeward trek, as Stewart dismissed the challenge posed by the city course in a measly 66 strokes. This was a stunning two-day showing from the silver-haired two-handicapper.
Stewart's accruing 42 points left him two clear of the overall runner-up, Michael Calvert, who amassed four birdies of his own including an incredible hat-trick of front-nine 2's. Calvert has had his handicap pruned to 12 on account of his excellent and eventful gross 79 but is likely still regretting his costly decision not to enter that day's 2's club!
The 9th was just one of six holes that Stewart Stevenson birdied on his way to a majestic gross 66 on 5 August.

The Open Stroke competition that kicked off County Armagh Golf Club's Open Week on 4 August was sponsored by Daly Motor Spares, and Declan McReynolds's golfing engine was purring as he cruised to a superb winning score of nett 64.
Declan had served notice to his fellow competitors that he was a man in form with a nett 67 that clinched category 1 victory in the previous weekend's July Medal. This time out, he reached the halfway point through a composed front nine of five pars and four bogeys. Even better would follow immediately thereafter, as birdies at the 11th and 12th were buffered on either side by momentum-maintaining pars at the 10th and 13th.
A slightly ragged 6, 5 climax came after two more pars at the 15th and 16th, but it all amounted to a marvellous six-over-par outing that granted McReynolds Snr a new handicap of 11 as well as tournament glory.
Peter Daly of Daly Motor Spares, sponsors of the Open Stroke event at County Armagh Golf Club, presents the winner, Declan McReynolds, with his prize. Also pictured are Club Captain, Colm Shannon, and fourth-placed Paul Pender.
The three slots immediately below Declan on the Saturday leaderboard were filled respectively by the alliterative triumvirate of Ciaran Conroy, Stewart Stevenson and Paul Pender.

Whereas almost biblical rainfall had caused the postponement of the Henry and May White Memorial Open 24 hours earlier, there were no such wetness worries at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday 24 July. And taking full advantage of these much more clement conditions was Brendan Arthurs, who fired a superb nett 65 to clinch the July Medal.
Brendan's uncertain start to proceedings in the Alexander Mills-sponsored event was soon forgotten when he parred the 3rd and then landed a hat-trick of pars from the 7th to the 9th. Arthurs had now found himself a massive five shots under his handicap at the halfway stage, which meant that a steady if unremarkable back nine was sufficient for him to deservedly get his hands on the coveted monthly silverware.
Pictured alongside Club Captain, Colm Shannon, are July Medal prizewinners (L-R): Shane O'Halloran, Aidan McParland, champion Brendan Arthurs, Niall McGeown, Declan McReynolds, Vincent McCormack and Chris McCabe.
Elsewhere, Chris McCabe's birdie up the 10th ignited an impressive four-over-par back nine that earned him a nett 66 and the overall runner-up award. McCabe has had his handicap snipped to 14 on account of this excellent gross 81, which featured no fewer than eight pars.
