McNabb Trophy win written in the stars for Gerry
IT was written in the stars ... astronomer Gerry Doyle will tell you after winning the CP McNabb Trophy.
The Armagh Observatory star-gazer picked up the coveted silverware with an out of this world winning score of 46 points in the first major competition of the season at the County Armagh course.
Taking full advantage of the drying conditions and run on course fairways, Gerry, a 21-handicapper, chalked up an impressive 24 points on the front nine holes, with a birdie 2 the 3rd hole thrown in for good measure. He added a further 22 points over the back nine holes to complete his winning score of 46 points.
The two-day competition officially kicking off the season, attracted considerable numbers and conditions favoured some very high scoring indeed. Among them was runner up to Gerry, Anthony Fagan with 43 points, steady scoring on front and back nines, 21 and 22 respectively.
Kieran Grimley lost out narowly on countback but would still have been very happy to pick up the 0-12 handicap category first prize with his 43 points for a round which included a birdie at the par five 8th hole and another birdie at the par four 17th hole.
Runner up to Kieran was Ryan McVeigh who had 42 points from a round which included birdies at the 4th, 8th and 12th holes, but his undoing was the 'no-score' at the par three 9th hole.
Competitions Convenor Paddy Burns led home the 13-18 handicap category with 43 points, birdies at the par five 10th and 12th holes the highlight of his round and ultimately pushing another in-form player, Winston Gordon, also with 43 points, back into the category runners up spot.
Gary Baird's Sunday afternoon stroll proved hugely worthwhile with 43 points securing him the Category 3 prize. His better back nine denied another Killyela man, Ian Ritche, who also returned 43 points on the day.

Accountant Jim banks Easter win
ACCOUNTANT Jim McCreesh banked an early year return by winning the Easter Stableford competition at County Armagh Golf Club.
Jim's 47 points was a hugely impressive lodgement and untouchable in the two-day event which attracted huge numbers over the holiday week-end.
The 14-handicapper was three points clear of the chasing pack with 24 points secured over the front nine holes and a further 23 added over the back nine.
Killylea man Brian Loney was the nearest anyone came to Jim's impressive total. His 44 points - 23 and 21 points front and back nines respectively - earned him runners up. However, had he scored at the par three 13th hole, it could have easily been his name in lights!
Despite the cold and windy conditions, the popular Easter competition produced quite a list of excellent early season scores.
Among them was that of former City of Armagh High School teacher Charlie Vernon with 42 points winning the 0-12 handicap category, and putting one over on Royal School teacher Ian Miller who chalked up 41 points to take the runners up prize.
In the 13 -18 handicap category it was Michael McParland whose 42 points was better than all the rest, and two more than Competitions Convenor Paddy Burns who impressively returned 25 points over the front nine holes, but disappointingly added only a further 15 points on the homeward trek for a total 40 points and runners up prize.
Brian Liddy led the 19-28 handicappers home on with 42 points which included three birdie scores at the 15th, 17th and 18th holes. Stephen McGarvey returned the same 42 points but Liddy's birdie scores was enough to take the category first prize.

COUNTY Armagh Golf Club newcomer Gerard O'Callaghan had reason more than most to celebrate St Patrick's Day after winning the Open stableford competition.
The 19-handicapper was untouchable with a winning score of 50 points - six points better than a field of more than 100 golfers on the day.
With 22 points secured on the front nine, Gerard produced a near flawless back nine to chalk up a further 28 points. Birdies at the 12th and 14th holes compensated for the only two dropped shots on the back nine at holes 16 and 18 for his level par finish.
