Brian takes chequered flag in Henry White Memorial
WITH a one-over par front-nine nicely tucked away, Brian Loney knew he was off to a flying start in the Henry White Memorial Cup competition at County Armagh.
And when the 11-handicapper dropped only a further four shots over the back nine holes to record a winning score nett 64, the coveted trophy, sponsored by Philip White Tyres, was his to celebrate.
Killylea man Brian led the huge field of golfers from early morning. A birdie 2 at the ninth hole compensated in part for shots dropped at the 1st and 5th holes for that one over par front nine. A further dropped shot at the par three 11th hole saw nerves beginning to creep into his game as he bogeyed 13, 15 and 16. But he steadied his game for pars at 17 and 18 for that untouchable score on the day.
Tommy Boyle deservedly secured runners up prize with a nett 65.
Paul McCreesh will undoubtedly have recounted his double bogeys at the 6th and 9th holes as that which perhaps denied him glory. But with a much better back nine he picked up third prize ahead of Andrew McTaggart who, in ccontrast, after superb birdie 3s at the 14th and 15th holes, suffered a hat-trick of double bogey holes to finish on nett 66.
Tommy Mackin's nett 67 launched a prize-winning week-end, securing him 5th prize in this competition and following up the very next day with a runners up prize in the club stableford.
Ian Millar and Sean Dougan, a manager at competition sponsor Philip White Tyres, also produced returns of nett 67, Ian's better back nine taking sixth and Sean seventh, prizes.
John Maguire produced the best gross score 71, winning on a back-nine countback from Edenmore visitor Philip Sheldon.

Birdie hat-trick primes Andy for stableford win
A BIRDIE hat-trick at the 5th, 6th and 7th holes primed victory for Killylea man Andrew Millar in the Sunday Stableford competition at County Armagh.
The village painter and decorator brushed up 10 stableford points from those three holes as part of a 21 points total for the front nine. And he added a similar second coat across the back nine holes for a further 21 points and a winning total of 42.
Tommy Mackin was his closest rival on 41 points and which ironically included a 'no score' a the 7th hole. His 24 points amassed from the back nine holes - on top of 17 from the front nine - was enough however, to secure him the runners up prize.
Marty Oliver shared a similar return of 41 points with a 'no score' at the 15th hole but picked up first prize in the 0-12 handicap category. His better last six meant Brian McGuigan, also returning 41 points, had to settle for runners up, although his disappointment will have been measured in the knowledge that he shared in the 2s with birdie two's at the 11th and 13th holes.
Philip Kelly led home the 13-18 handicap category winners with 39 points - a birdie 3 at the 15th hole the main highlight of his round. And Turlough Brady collected the runners up prize with 38points.
Showing good form in recent weeks, James Magwood produced very consistent scores to take the honours in the 19-28 handicap category returning 40 points. And Brian Liddy was runner up with 38 points, despite 'no scores' at the 3rd and 5th holes.
Four-handicapper Neil Cromwell's 40 points earned him the Best Gross score on the day.

Bernard lifts Londsale Cup
BERNARD Grimley will have his name engraved on the Lonsdale Cup after a one-shot victory in the County Armagh Golf Cup annual Open competition.
The 16-handicapper's nett 64 was enough to lift the coveted trophy ahead of Andrew Conn whose six-over par round deservedly earned him the runners up prize.
Consistency was the name of the game for Grimley as he parted sparingly with shots for a six-over front nine holes and included a double bogey six at the sxith hole. And he used up just a further four shots of his handicap over the back nine holes to achieve his winning score , nett 64
Conn was equally a master of consistency and produced a five-over par front nine and one over par back nine for his nett 65.
Paddy Duffy claimed third prize with a net 65, winning on countback from Kieran Donnelly, also on nett 65 and whose round included birdies at the second, seventh and a remarkable eagle 2 at the 17th hole.
Back in the prizes, Winston Gordon was fifth with a similar nett 65, and two shots adrift on nett 67, Davy Grimley was sixth, with Alan Pedlow bringing up the rear with a nett 67 also.
Stewart Stevenson was undoubtedly the gross marksman on the day with a gross 70, and recording birdies at 4, 5 and 12 while John Maguire produced a superb gross 72 to claim the runners up prize in the category.
