Late comers win Open 4-ball Classic
Whether playing later to avoid the heat of the day was a tactical decision, it proved a winning one for Paul Corvan, Leo King, Gary Lappin and Stephen McGarvey in the Open 4-Ball Classic competition at Armagh on Saturday.
The four-ball who only took to the course late afternoon amassed a huge 102 points to win the event sponsored by Bunzl McLaughlin, Armagh.
Brendan Smyth, Patrick Brannigan, Pat Brannigan and Mervyn Watts would surely have believed they had bagged the winning score with a 101 points return, but it was enough only to earn them second prize.
Declan Lenagh, Tom Calvert and the Wasson brothers Paul and Michael were just a further point adrift on 100 points.

George and Dorothy smiling all the way
George Gillespie and partner Dorothy Harris had smiles to delight even sponsor Paul Reaney from Dentistry at Markethill when they were declared winners of the Open Family Greensomes at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday.
With a nett 63 the pair took the honours ahead of mother and daughter Teresa and Catherine Corrigan on nett 63.5
Father and son Patrick J and Pat Brannigan collected third prize on the day with a nett 65.5.
And another father and son Declan and Jarleth McReynolds produced the best gross score 76.
Once again the superb weather made for an excellent day's golfing for this popular annual greensomes competition. Many stayed on to enjoy the club cameraderie and a sumptuous meal in the club's Green Room Restaurant before the prizes were presented by Vice Captain Pat McAleavey and competition sponsor Paul Reaney from Dentistry at Markethill.

Currie's just too hot in Twelfth Open
A SIZZLING three-under par round producing 45 stableford points by James Currie was simply too hot to handle for the rest of the field in the Open competition played at County Armagh on the Twelfth.
The six handicapper was untouchable, two points clear of his nearest challenger Mervyn Watts whos own impressive score of 43 points could have claimed the prize on any other day.
Currie dropped a shot at the first but followed up with birdies at the second, third and fourth holes and by the turn had maintained the good form to remain two-under par. A further birdie followed at the 12th hole and with pars at each of the remianing holes he was always going to be hard to beat.
Killyea's Lee Stewart picked up third prize with 42 points and Caolan Doyle claimed fourth on countback with 41 points and a better back nine than Kenny Edgar on a similar score of 41 points.
Andy Conn's 40 points earned him the final men's prize on the day.
In glorious sunshine the ladies also enjoyed the Open competition on the same day and it was Paula McCrory who led home the winners with 33 points. Cath Murray picked up second prize with 31 points and after countback Sylvia Ash and Alexandra Mawhinney collected third and fourth prizes respectively after each finished on 30points

Eamon collects first club Medal
EAMON McVeigh will be wishing it had all come together just a day earlier than the Sunday he produced his best round of the year to win the County Armagh Golf Club July Medal.
His winning 64 nett score was produced just 24 hours after Captain's Day!
But Eamon was still delighted to have picked up his first ever Medal at the club, presented by Vice Captain Pat McAleavey in front of a packed clubhouse on Sunday evening.
The par three holes 3 and 9, plus the equally less difficult sixth hole, were those on which 15-handicapper Eamon dropped shots on his outward trek. But he managed to maintain the consistency and dropped only a further six shots over the back nine holes for a nett 64 finish.
By a single shot, it was enough to take the honours ahead of Danny McGee. The 13-handicapper, after a six-over par front nine, was just 2-over par on the back nine for his nett 65 finish.
And it was his better back nine which ultimately decided the Category 2 prizes, Pat McKenna with a nett 65 winning, and the previous day's winner of the Captain's Prize, Barry Scully, was runner up with a nett 66.
Andrew Millar was the deserving winner of the Category 1 prize with a nett 66. The seven handicapper one under par after nine, dropped just four shots on the return trek - three of them at the final three holes! Adam Hunniford was runner up with a nett 67.
Eamon Toner won Category 3 with an excellent nett 70, with runner up Mervyn Watts kicking off what was to prove a winning week ahead, runner up with a nett 71.
A gross 73 won Stewart Stevenson the Gross Prize on countback.
