CHARITY was the biggest winner at County Armagh Golf Club this year, with over £4,000 presented to local charity organisations.
NI Chest, Heart and Stroke Association, Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Support were the beneficiaries of collections on the club's three big golfing occasions during the season.
The magnificent sum of £1,577 was collected on Lady Captain's Day in July and presented to the NI Chest Heart and Stroke Association by Lady Captain Gail Steed
Club President Walter Neville's similarly impressive collection of £900 from members and guests on his President's Day in August was presented to Marie Curie.
And Club Captain Richard Stewart welcomed representatives of Macmillan Cancer Support for the presentation of a cheque for £700, proceeds of his charity collection on Captain's Day in June.

Members will wish to note drainage works will begin this week at the 16th green.
The work, which is necessary to deflect water from running onto the surface of the green, will be carried out in conjunction with Clive Richardson Ltd, the Sports Ground Construction Company.
It is envisaged the green will be closed throughout the winter months, re-opening before the new season gets underway in earnest in the new year.

County Armagh Golf Club has recently been basking in the reflected glory of its very own John Maguire, who has been crowned the 2017 HowDidiDo Titleist Order of Merit Champion.
As most golfers will be aware, HowDidiDo is the online network that collates the scores and handicaps of all amateurs across the UK and Ireland. That John even qualified for the Grand Final at Turnberry was a quite exceptional feat in itself as, to do so, he finished 2nd of 22,000 contenders in Ireland.

In the qualification process for its Order of Merit tournament, which is held in association with Titleist, HowDidiDo considers each competitor's five best scores of the season, with bonus points awarded for birdies and eagles.

Few can match Shea Smyth's infectious enthusiasm for and dedication to the game of golf - and no one could catch him in the race to become County Armagh Golf Club's Golfer of the Year 2017.
The Golfer of the Year format sees points awarded in weekend qualifiers throughout the season and, having featured among the prizes time and time again, Shea did more than enough to take the 2017 crown.
With his playing handicap fluctuating between two and three since the beginning of April, Smyth was a talented player operating at a high level. While prizes arrived in almost every month, his glorious campaign perhaps peaked in the first half of May, when a blistering run of three gross 68s in the space of nine days earned him overall runner-up finishes in the Bumblebee Cup, the PGA Tankard and a Sunday Club Stableford.

Either side of that particularly hot streak, the affable red-head secured category honours in a Club Stableford on 8 April, a McAnenly Transport-sponsored event on 9 July and the Fairlawns Residential Home tournament on 3 September.

Best of luck to our very own John Maguire, who's competing for the 2017 Howdidido Titleist Order of Merit title at Turnberry today (Wednesday 18 October).
John finished 2nd of 22,000 contenders in Ireland to qualify for the 36-hole Grand Final, where he'll now battle against 15 other players from across the UK and Ireland.
A full report to mark John's remarkable exploits, and those of Lee Campbell who won Ireland's junior category, will be published on the club website and Facebook page very soon.
Well done, John and Lee!
