The weather was anything but Spring-like for the forty ladies, including visitors from Dungannon and Portadown, who took part in the Spring Open at Co Armagh Golf Club on Monday 13 May.
The rain set in mid-afternoon and continued for the remainder of the day and by the time it came to prize-giving it looked and felt more like a winter’s evening. Though that did not dampen spirits!
The competition was once again very generously sponsored by Lila’s and Lady Captain Ellen Brady extended a warm welcome to Mark Hawthorne and ladies who were in attendance for prize-giving, thanking Mark for his long and valued sponsorship. Mark commented that Lila’s had been sponsoring the competition for 15 years.
The delighted winner was Maggie Clarke with 38 points and she was presented with the cup and first place prize by Mark Hawthorne, Lila’s. For the second consecutive year and with the same score, Teresa McVeigh was second with 37 pts.
Maggie McKee was the gross winner with 21 gross points, beating Past Lady Captain Lily McMullan and Lady Captain Ellen Brady on the countback. This was another special day for Maggie to add to her many golfing achievements as it was her first gross prize win.
Gillian Poole was third with 36 pts, Valerie Gordon 4th with 36 pts and Marie Tennyson 5th with 35 pts.
The category prize winners were:
Cat A – Past Lady Captain Lily McMullan 31 pts
Cat B – Colette McAleavey 32 pts
(beating Gail Steed on countback)
Cat C – Lynne Brown 33 pts
Cat D – Jacqueline Kelly 34 pts
Sylvia Ashe won the Visitor Prize with 30 pts.
The front 9 was won by Lena Duffy with 20 pts and Lorraine Megaw won the back 9 with 18 pts.
The 9 hole competition was won by Teresa Corrigan with 16 pts and Molly Conway was second with 15 pts.
Siobhan Donnelly had a birdie at the 15th and Bernie Rice a 2 at the 11th.
The availability of catering provided by Parkland Restaurant was greatly appreciated since the restaurant is normally closed on a Monday.
