PRESIDENT GERRY HOPES TO EMULATE OLD FRIEND WALTER

County Armagh Golf Club's new President, Gerry McCreesh, has spoken of his honour at taking up the position for 2018-19.

Gerry told assembled members and guests at the New Year's Day inauguration ceremony, “This is a very proud day for me and for my family.

“When I came into the clubhouse this evening, I looked up at the board showing the names of all the previous Presidents. When I think of all the things those people have done for this club, I realise I've a lot to live up to. It's a daunting task but one I look forward to."

County Armagh Golf Club's new President, Gerry McCreesh, is presented with his new club blazer by his predecessor, Walter Neville.

McCreesh paid particular tribute to outgoing President, Walter Neville, who undertook the role with such enthusiasm and dignity in 2016-17.

CAPTAIN COLM SETS SIGHTS HIGH AT COUNTY ARMAGH

Immediately on being confirmed as its 2018 Captain, Colm Shannon outlined a positive vision for County Armagh Golf Club during his tenure and beyond.

After smacking his ceremonial drive up the first fairway, Shannon struck an upbeat and progressive tone when addressing a busy clubhouse at a New Year's Day inauguration event that also saw Elizabeth Mawhinney, Gerry McCreesh and Kenny Edgar assume the roles of Lady Captain, President and Vice Captain respectively.

“I feel very honoured that I have been asked to be the club's Captain in the year that we celebrate our 125th anniversary. I hope I can live up to everyone's expectations.”

“I first joined back in the early 70s when I was 11 or 12 and this was a 9-hole course. It was a great club then and, thanks to the efforts of the members and Captains over the years, both men and women, it's still a great club.”

“I went onto Council in 2007 because I wanted to give something back to a club that had served me so well for so long. We have great full-time staff but it's the volunteers, convenors and members of Council who provide the direction and guidance.”

“I really want to continue the tradition of members getting involved in helping out. If there is something you think you can do, just let me or one of the other Council members know. Every bit counts, no matter how small.”

Charity big winner at County Armagh Golf Club

CHARITY was the biggest winner at County Armagh Golf Club this year, with over £4,000 presented to local charity organisations.

NI Chest, Heart and Stroke Association, Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Support were the beneficiaries of collections on the club's three big golfing occasions during the season.

The magnificent sum of £1,577 was collected on Lady Captain's Day in July and presented to the NI Chest Heart and Stroke Association by Lady Captain Gail Steed

Club President Walter Neville's similarly impressive collection of £900 from members and guests on his President's Day in August was presented to Marie Curie.

And Club Captain Richard Stewart welcomed representatives of Macmillan Cancer Support for the presentation of a cheque for £700, proceeds of his charity collection on Captain's Day in June.
