EVEN with a one-shot handicap cut following his heroics in the Lonsdale Cup, John Vernon was the top scorer in the County Armagh Sunday stroke event.
His nett 67 winning score was three shots less than his impressive Lonsdale Cup finish which earned him the runners up prize. But it was still Sunday's best.
John, playing of a 9-handicap, was just three shots over at the turn and repeated that effort on the homeward trek with a birdie 2 at the 13 th compensating for one of only four shots dropped over the back nine holes.
That was enough to push Gervase Hughes (8) into second spot after he too returned a nett 67.
In Category 1 Neil Linton (7) returned to the winners rostrum with a nett 68 to claim first prize on countback from Ian Millar (12) returning a nett 68 also.
Category 2 was equally tightly contested – Iggy Mallon's nett 70 however, was one better than Sean McAnenly on nett 71.
And in Category 3 it was Peter Murtagh who took the honours with a nett 72 ahead of Anthony Fagan on nett 73.
