A birdie at the final hole by Gervase Hughes secured victory in the King Bros Quarry sponsored stableford competition at County Armagh.
Just minutes after Brian Loney (7) had returned a top score 41 points, 9-handicapper Gervase grabbed the glory with his ‘three' at the par four 18 th . It completed a points tally of 41 – equal to Brian's – but on countback it was that birdie which proved the difference between the two players.
Jarlath McReynolds is presented with his Gross Prize by Robert King from King Bros Quarry, sponsors of the annual stableford competition at County Armagh Golf Club. Included also is Club Captain Martin Oliver and other prize winners from this competition and the James Coburn Ltd sponsored stableford, from left Anthony McAneaney, Past Captain Richard Black, Brian Cleland and Jim Carberry.
A steady front nine by Gervase with 20 points amassed, was continued for a further three holes at the beginning of the back nine. After an unfortunate ‘no score' at the 13 th hole however, he was quickly back on track to complete the homeward trek with a further 21 points.
Brian's runner up performance saw him open with a birdie at the first hole and with further steady scoring he had 22 points on his card after nine holes. He added 19 points on the back nine but on countback his final 41 points tally sadly just fell short.
Past Captain Richard Black (12) is obviously getting his game back in shape after a busy year in office, and with 39 points won Category 1 first prize. Adam Hunniford (9) was runner-up with 38 points – a ‘no score' at the second hole costing him dearly.
Lee Kirrane (14) meanwhile, was back in the prizes with 40 points securing him first prize in Category 2. And Neil Dowzell (16) who also recently featured in the prizes was runner up with 38 points.
In Category 3, Jim Carberry's 38 points was better by three points from runner up Sean T Dougan (20) who returned 35 points.
And Jarleth McReynolds' 38 points was the Best Gross score on the day.
