AN HISTORIC CLUB WITH A MAGNIFICENT GEORGIAN PARKLAND SETTING SINCE 1893

County Armagh Golf Club have booked their place in the third round of the Senior Cowdy Cup with an ultimately convincing victory over Rossmore.

The first leg was played away in County Monaghan on 19 June when, in pretty grim weather conditions, Gary McCourt's charges emerged with a creditable 7.5 of the 20 available points.

That granted the CAGC lads with a decent platform to build on in the return leg seven days later. And back on home soil, they duly racked up a further 15 points, which meant an overall winning margin of 22.5 to 17.5.

The triumphant Senior Cowdy second round panel consisted of Shea Brady, Sam Jenkins, Dermot McCaffrey, Shea Smyth, Lee Stewart and Jimmy Wilson.

And next up is a quarter-final showdown with Banbridge, which will be contested over two legs before the end of July. Best of luck to Gary's group!

Elsewhere, CAGC have recently exited four other inter-club matchplay tournaments.

Following excellent performances in qualifying and in their first round defeat of Belvoir Park, Ian Millar's Pierce Purcell panel reached the end of the road against a much-fancied Moyola Park opponent at the neutral venue of Killymoon on 23 June.

On the same day, Richard Black's Barton Shield quartet travelled to Slieve Russell, County Cavan, where they dispatched Rossmore in a morning preliminary round before losing out to Mourne in the afternoon.

That busy Sunday also saw Patrick Brannigan's Sam Rutherford Memorial Cup squad eliminated at the hands of Dungannon.

And a week later on 30 June, despite Jarlath McReynolds's sterling efforts to ensure that the fixture was fulfilled in the first place, the Fred Daly Trophy juniors were beaten by Belfast side, Greenacres.

As ever, whether in victory or defeat, many thanks to everyone who gives up their time to represent any of CAGC's teams.
