HE came within a shot of winning the April Medal, but a month later the much sought after club silverware was secured. David Leeman's excellent nett 63 won the May Medal competition at County Armagh.
In contrasting conditions to the wet and blustery conditions of the previous day, sunshine and warm breezes brought a number of exceptional scores in this second Medal event of the season. But none better than David's.
Davy Leeman is presented with the May Medal by County Armagh Golf Club Captain Martin Oliver, with category prize winners (L-R) Gerry Cullen, Joe Rooney, Cormac O'Hare and John Lavery
Three double bogeys in the first four holes certainly didn't indicate a winning score was on the cards. However, with a three over par back nine which included a birdie 2 at the 11 th , there was no catching the 16-handicapper.
Lee Stewart (6) did his very best to overhaul him but even with a level par round for a nett 64, it still wasn't enough, although he did pick up the runners up prize for his efforts.
In Category 1, John Lavery (11) returned a nett 65 to take first prize – helped by a birdie three at the par four 6 th hole. Joe Rooney (8) was runner up with a nett 68, including a birdie three at the 17 th hole.
Cormac O'Hare (13) with a nett 67 picked up first prize in Category 2 – a birdie 2 at the 7 th hole enhancing his winnings and a better back nine edging it ahead of Brendan Beagan (17) who also returned a nett 67 for the runners up prize.
Gerry Cullen (20) meanwhile, was the outright winner in Category 3 with a nett 65 and Sean T Dougan returned a nett 66 – with a 9 at the 10 th hole – to take the runners up prize.
