Kieran lifts CP McNabb Trophy
KIERAN Grimley kicked on his golfing season at County Armagh by winning the magnificent CP McNabb Trophy.
One of the oldest of the club trophies, the CP McNabb is always keenly sought after in what has annually become the first major stableford competition of the golfing calendar.
Kieran returned a winning score of 43 stableford points to secure his victory – although it did take a count-back to separate him and Brendan McKinney who returned a similar 43 points.
Playing off a handicap of 11, a birdie three at the first hole got Kieran off to the best possible start, and despite a no-score at the seventh hole, he had racked up 22 points by the turn.
That excellent form continued through the back nine where he birdied the 12 th hole but almost blew it on the 18 th where a double bogey six saw him add just a single point to his tally.
But it was an important point which saw off Brendan McKinney – playing of a handicap of 17 - in the count- back.
Brendan, impressively bagged 23 points from his front nine and added a further 20 on the back nine which earned him the runners up prize.
Ten-handicapper Anthony Farrell claimed the Category 1 first prize with 42 points, two ahead of runner up Andrew Dunwoody on 40 points.
Davy Spratt picked up his second prize in a week with 42 points securing first place in Category 2, again two points separated first and second, Eamon McVeigh the runner up on this occasion with 40 points.
And Ulster Fourball team captain Tim Teehan set a good example to colleagues returning 42 points to take the honours in Category 3m, with Gerard McCoy losing out on countback after returning an equally impressive 42 points.

Close run thing for Andrew
The finite margins between victory and defeat are all too familiar to Andrew Rennie as a former wicket-keeper with Armagh Cricket Club.
And on the golf course too he's now discovering that philosophy can equally be applied.
Fortunately however, he was on the side of victory in the recent Chest Heart and Stroke charity stableford competition at County Armagh in which he emerged as the eventual winner after a very detailed count-back involving seven-handicapper Philip Kelly after both players returned 41 points.
Both chalked up 21 points from the front nine holes – Philip impressively with birdie twos at the third, sixth and ninth holes. And they couldn't be separated either on the back nine with both adding a further 20 points – Philip registering a further birdie three at the 15 th .
Nigel McMahon's 40 points from his round which included a birde four at the par five 10 th hole and a no-score at 13 th , earned him first prize in Category 1, just pipping Roy Turner on count-back. Roy too was on birdie trail at the first and second holes.
Davy Spratt meanwhile, bagged the first of what was to be back-to-back category wins withn a seven day period, his 39 points securing him the prize, on count-back with PJ Quinn.
And Martin Kelly's 39 points won Category 3 where Gerry Doyle was runner up with a similar 39 points, losing out on count-back
