County Armagh Golf Club’s Senior Cup squad have secured their passage to the tournament’s third round after taking the considerable scalp of Lisburn.
Having chalked up a notable victory against Royal County Down at the previous stage, Jimmy Wilson’s five-man team faced the Lagan Valley outfit on 16 August.
In Lisburn, Stewart Stevenson and Adam Cromwell both performed doughtily before suffering late losses at the 17th and 18th respectively. However, back down the M1 on home turf, Philip Kelly, Jarlath McReynolds and John Maguire showed no mercy in the more familiar surroundings, with each posting an impressive point. The final outcome, then, was a memorable 3-2 CAGC win that sets up a compelling clash with near neighbours Tandragee.
On the same day, however, CAGC were ushered through the Pierce Purcell Shield exit doors by Portadown. This time, a narrow 3-2 scoreline went against Ian Millar’s charges, but they can still look back with fondness on a brief campaign that produced victory over Concra Wood in round 2.
A week previously on 9 August, also facing elimination from this season’s inter-club matchplay scene were our Junior Cuppers. The Stewart Stevenson-led crew went out at the hands of Slieve Russell in particularly agonising fashion, losing the first extra hole after a tied game.
On 23 August, the Ulster Cup panel, fresh from their dismisssal of Ashfield last time out, will take on Lurgan in another derby match.
County Armagh Golf Club would like to thank everyone involved for giving up their time to represent our club teams and wish the best of luck to all those involved in upcoming encounters.
