AN HISTORIC CLUB WITH A MAGNIFICENT GEORGIAN PARKLAND SETTING SINCE 1893

On 2 August, while County Armagh Golf Club members aged 50 and over competed for the Mayne Cup or the Half-Century Cup, all those rendered ineligible for either on account of their relative youthfulness participated in a stableford competition sponsored by Rumour Cafe.

Triumphant here was Martin Gill, whose 42 points were accumulated via a fabulous two-under-par outing. The big-hitting four-handicapper’s gross 68 comprised birdies at the 6th, 7th, 13th and 17th, a dozen pars and only two dropped shots. Just like that.

Behind Martin, James Nesbitt filled second spot with a fantastic 39-point salvo that also earned him a new handicap of 17. James threatened to get cold feet with a no-score at the last hole but there was nothing missing from his excellent performance hitherto, including the run of five pars on the spin from the 11th to 15th.

Completing the Sunday prizewinning line-up in third place was Joe Rooney, whose expert one-under-par showing featured atypical double bogeys at Plateau and Sequoias but also the more familiar class of five birdies and 12 pars elsewhere.
