AN HISTORIC CLUB WITH A MAGNIFICENT GEORGIAN PARKLAND SETTING SINCE 1893

Despite a hectic current schedule that sees his weeknights filled with meetings, his weekends spent following the club's teams the length and breadth of the Province and almost every other waking moment consumed with other club duties, notably preparations for his big day  on 24 June, Captain Richard Stewart still managed to squeeze in competition glory at County Armagh Golf Club.

In the Open Stroke sponsored by Hillview Lodge Driving Range on Saturday 27 May, Richard produced a career best gross 77 to seal victory by a single stroke from the red-hot Christopher Lester.

Six outward pars enabled Stewart to reach the turn in 37 blows before he went into overdrive early in his back nine.

Birdie fours at the 10th and 12th mingled agreeably with pars at the 11th, 13th and 14th as the then 14-handicapper found himself just one over par with four holes remaining.

It's entirely understandable for anyone to become a tad edgy at such a highly promising juncture and, indeed, Richard somewhat stumbled over the finish line.

However, El Capitano wouldn't be denied a stunning nett 63, which was even more impressive considering the blustery and showery conditions with which he had to cope. His red-letter day means a handicap snip to 12 and ought to put an increased spring in his step for the further busy days and nights ahead.

Runner-up Lester's nett 64 contained nine pars but also a momentum-shattering treble bogey at Sequoias, an admirable riposte to which saw him drop just one more stroke over the remaining four holes.

So, the Bumblebee Cup winner continues to buzz along merrily, with his handicap having been slashed from 22 to 17 already this term.

The format of such an Open event sees the customary category prize structure dispensed with in favour of straightforward 1st-to-7th placings.

Having secured a prize just a fortnight before, Conor McAneney was up to his old tricks again and took bronze. The harm of double bogeys at the 1st and 17th was more than assuaged by a birdie at the 8th and eight pars elsewhere as McAneney carded a superb nett 65 in a continuation of his quietly assured golfing year to date.

Trailing Conor by just one shot was Ciaran Conroy, who recorded a birdie two at the 3rd and pars at the 2nd, 9th, 11th and 12th as he constructed an excellent nett 66.

In turn, three players were a stroke further back on nett 67 and had to be separated by a break of tie.

Leading that triumvirate was Mickey Macklin, whose 5th place finish was made possible by a tidy level-par six-hole streak at the beginning of his back nine that culminated in a Beresford birdie.

Aidan McParland fired a shot across the bows of anyone who would dare to suggest that the Curley brothers are the only members of that Saturday fourball capable of bringing home the bacon, as he birdied the 9th on his way to 6th spot.

And a no-nonsense round of seven pars and 11 bogeys handed 14-handicapper Gerald McKenna 7th position on the same creditable nett 67 mark.

In the gross reckoning, scratch man Philip Kelly was best with a level par 70 that was two better than runner-up John Maguire.

Both John and Philip carried this fine form into the following day's Senior Cup qualifying at Rossmore, where a five-man County Armagh squad also featuring Jarlath McReynolds, Joe Rooney and Stewart Stevenson topped the standings ahead of 15 other clubs.

The lads' reward for this fantastic achievement is a trip to the same venue, where they'll face Tandragee  on Sunday 2 July .

On a busy couple of weekends of team action, there was less positive news for the club's Pierce Purcell, Junior Cowdy, Jimmy Bruen and Rossmore Cup sides, who unfortunately exited at the hands of Moyola Park, Spa, Cloverhill and Portadown respectively, while the Junior Cup men were eliminated in qualifying at Banbridge.

County Armagh Golf Club would like to put on record its thanks to everyone involved for giving up their time to represent the club.
