COUNTY Armagh Golf Club's Martin Oliver can lay claim to be the best playing captain in Ulster this year – well almost!

For Martin picked up the runners up prize in the Max Hadden Trophy competition played annually at Royal Belfast Golf Club.

County Armagh Golf Club Captain Martin Oliver is presented with his runners up prize in the Max Hadden Trophy by Royal Belfast Golf Club Captain William Fitpatrick.

More than 80 golfers - current GUI Ulster Captains and officials - took part in the stableford event at Ireland's oldest golf course. And when all the results were returned, the runner's up prize was won by Martin with a very impressive 35points (gross 78).

GUI Honorary Secretary and County Armagh Golf Club Trustee John White won the Visitor's Prize.

“It was a fabulous day,” declared Martin. “I got to renew old friendships from years gone by and meet many of the captains of clubs across the province. My fourball included the captain's of Belvoir, Masserene and Mourne golf clubs and we had a very enjoyable round. The course was excellent and the fantastic views just made it all the more enjoyable.”

Coffee and bacon rolls were enjoyed by captains and officials alike before they set off on their round. And afterwards a traditional fayre of steak and kidney pie was served before the presentation of prizes.

“I was absolutely delighted to take the runner's up prize,” said Martin. “It's one of the many highlights of my year as Captain of County Armagh which I will remember fondly.”
