John Flack is the new Captain of County Armagh Golf Club.

The Markethill man, past vice-captain, takes on the office for 2013. A new navy-blue Captain's blazer was presented to John in front of a packed clubhouse at the Captain's inauguration on New Year's Day.

It was as a student of the Royal School in the early sixties that John first played golf at the County Armagh course. But he didn't become a full member of the club until 1996.

In 2008 he was elected to Council and became the Professional Convener.  A year later in 2009 he took on the role of Sponsors' Convenor and to this day remains in that post. "Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a successor yet," he quips.

John captained the Ulster Fourball team from 2008 to 2012 and was responsible for bringing home the club's first GUI blue pennant after winning the tournament in 2010.

"It is my ambition to guide the club through what promises to be a difficult financial year, in a prudent and cohesive manner," the new Captain told members.
"I hope all our members and visitors alike enjoy their golf on our excellent golf course."

Although now retired, John worked as Plant pathologist (plant doctor) in Department of Agriculture. In 1979 he opened a wholesale horticulture nursery at Maghnavery, just outside Markethill, producing a wide range of plants for sale in garden centres throughout Ireland and on the mainland. In 2002 he sold the nursery and thereafter, in semi-retirement, undertook some book-keeping contracts.

"I am now ready to concentrate on and enjoy my year as Captain of County Armagh Golf Club," he adds.
