Kieran lifts Allen Cup prize

Kieran Grimley could be a good bet for the Captain's prize on Saturday June 25 after shooting the club's best score for the second consecutive week on Sunday.

He had to settle for a category prize in the June Medal competition last week, but he wasn't for sharing the JR McMahon sponsored Allen Cup with anyone this week, romping to victory by three clear shots. His nett 64 was also two shots better than last week's nett 66 and such form should augur well for Captain's Day this week.

With Lady Captain's Day limiting the men to one competition at the week-end, scores were always expected to be exceptional and for the first time in several weeks thewinning scores were all posted in the 60's.

None better though than 12-handicapper Kieran Grimley's nett 64. Dropped shots at holes 2, 3 and 6 saw Kieran just three over at the turn. A birdie four at the 10th set the stage for the back nine, and although he double bogeyed at the par three 11th, he dropped only a further two shots at the 12th and 17th to finish with a gross 76, nett 64.

Paul Hughes was his nearest challenger, three points adrift on nett 67, a birdie four at the par five 12th hole the highlight of a steady round.

Seven-handicapper Barrie Walker led the category prizes with a nett 68, one over after nine holes and dropping only a further four shots over his back nine to win Category One from Brian Hughes on nett 68.

In Category 2 Michael Curley shot a similar nett 68 to take first prize, but he will remember his round for one other reason, or rather a hole-in-one. Michael delivered the perfect 4-iron shot to the ninth green for his ace. Noel Murtagh was a deserved runner up with a nett 69.

And Gareth Frizell took the Category 3 top prize with a nett 67 with a steady round and Kieran Mullan sank a 20 foot putt at the course's most difficult 16th hole for a par to earn him runners up with a nett 69.

Michael Curley celebrated a Hole-in-One at County Armagh on Sunday. His magificent 4-iron shot to the ninth green found the cup for his ace in the Allen Cup competition, sponored by JR McMahon.

Mixed Greensomes Fri 10 June

Jerome and Mary mix it up for win

Jerome Leer and Mary Black were perfectly in the picture for the Star Sound and Visions sponsored Mixed Greensomes competition.

The pair collected first prize from sponsor Mark Frazer and Club Captain after a recording a fantastic winning score of nett 58.

They were just six over after nine holes and after 18 had used up just a further two shots of their 20-handicap.

Second placed Jarlath McReynolds and Ann Canavan, with a handicap of 13, opened their round birdie, birdie, par on their way to a level par score after nine holes. And like their winning opponents Jerome and Mary, they used only two further shots of their handicap on the return trek to finish with an equally impressive 59 nett score.

Regulars in the mixed prizes, husband and wife Andy and Gail Steed collected third prize with a nett 62.5 of their 18.5 handicap.

And Ian and Ann O'Hea were fourth with a nett 63 score.

Stuart's a sizzling June medal winner

Stuart Stevenson's superb level par gross, nett 66, score on Sunday secured him the June Medal and a place in the club championship later this year.

The four-handicapper shot a one-under par back nine after a one over par front nine for a hugely impressive nett 66 finish to clinch victory on a day when the low handicappers featured prominently among the prizes.

Master John Maguire, who plays off a handicap of five, shot the same nett 66 score. He birdied the par five eighth hole to cover a dropped shot at the difficult sixth hole on his way to a level par front nine. On his return trek he also dropped a shot at the tenth, but recovered brilliantly with a birdie two at the 11th hole. A double bogey six at the 16th hole was unfortunately his undoing.

Ironically it was the very same 16th hole which ultimately robbed Kieran Grimley of the much sought after Medal prize.  He too double bogeyed before finishing with a nett 66. Part of a winning team in the previous day's 4-Ball Classic, Kieran was rewarded however with first prize in Category 1. The 12 handicapper was just three over nine holes. Mark Fraser shot a nett 68 for second prize in Category 1.

Keady man Conlon Rice picked up first prize in Category 2 with a nett 67 - a steady round which included a birdie two at the 11th hole which was obviously the difference on countback with Oisin Gill who also shot a nett 67 and picked up second prize.

Ciaran Black's nett 68 earned him first prize in Category 3 despite a triple bogey start. And yet again Anthony McEneaney slipped in for a prize with a nett 71.

4 Ball Team Classic Sat 11 June

1st D Smyth, B Smyth, M Daly, P Brannigan 95 pts

2nd I O'Hea, M Grimley, J Leer, M McParland 92 pts (best back nine)

3rd C Shannon, K Grimley, D Grimley, E Creelman 92pts

It's a team game - ask Brendan!

County Armagh Golf Club Vice Captain Brendan Smith will readily admit his was a minor role in his team's big-scoring 4-Ball Classic win on Saturday.

His worldly (and local) knowledge he will claim however, guided colleagues Martin Daly, Pat Brannigan and Damien Smith to their win. They scored 95 stableford points to take the top prize in the competition where players handicaps were reduced to three-quarters, three player scores counted at holes 3, 5, 10 and 18 and two at all others. With 50 points amassed over teh front ninethey were well on their way and by 18 they had added a further 45 for that winning score.

Ian O'Hea, a winner with wife Ann in the Mixed Greensomes the evening before, Martin Grimley, Jerome Leer and Michael McParland claimed second prize with 92 points on countback. 46points on the front nine holes and 46 on the back nine secured the runners up spot for these earlybirds.

Equally early on the course, Colm Shannon, Kieran and David Grimley and Eugene Creelman returned the same 92 points score but had to settle for third prize.
