Declan's a Medal winner

Declan's a Medal winner

DECLAN McReynolds produced his best round of the season to win the County Armagh Golf Club August Medal with an impressive score nett 64.

Paul Corvan's double bogey at the par three 13th hole was his ultimate undoing when countback was required to separate the nett 64 scores both he and Declan declared.

Just two over par at the half-way stage, 11-handicapper Declan dropped only a further three shots on his homeward trek for his winng score.

Fourteen handicapper Paul was just three over par at the turn, but as well as that unlucky double bogey at 13, he dropped shots at 15, 16 and 18.

Early-bird Andrew Millar led home the Category winners with a nett 65 and better back nine securing him first prize in Category 1 ahead of George Bradshaw who returned the same score.

In the mid-handicap catetory it was another early-bird Colm McElroy who claimed first prize ahead of Jim McKeown, again countback was required to separate the two nett 66 scores.

And Leslie Lynas's nett 65 for a win in Category 3, where Colm O'Farrel was runner up on nett 66, secured his place in the Club Championship come next month.

Brian's pick of the crop!

Brian's pick of the crop!

Brian Wilson was pick of the crop in the Armagh Potato Company Ltd sponsored open stableford competition at County Armagh.

'Red', as his playing partners know him, produced the winning score in the Saturday competition - 41 points - on what many found a difficult track with swirling winds also wrecking havoc.

He 'dug-out' five pars on the opening front nine to 'gather' 20 points, and a further five pars plus a birdie three at the 17th hole saw him store another 21 points for a total barrowful of 41 points.

It was a whole furrow or point more than the rest of the field - Francis Tallon from Lurgan Golf Club was the next best spademan with 40 points and a better back nine than third placed Paddy Digby who returned the same score.

Killylea man Brian Loney boiled a up 40 points for his fourth place finish with Don McKee fifth on 39 points, his back nine proving better than that of another 39 pointer, Andrew Clarke, in sixth place. And Anthony Fagan had a tasty 38 points to take the final prize.

Gross Prize were won by Lugan Golf Club visitor Michael McSherry on 35 gross points with Conor McGurgan second on 34 gross points.

Murphy's law - Pete lifts Arthur Mayne Cup

Murphy's law - Pete lifts Arthur Mayne Cup

PETE Murphy belied his pension age to produced the winning score and lift the Arthur Mayne Cup at County Armagh.

In the stableford competition for over 65s, Pete's 41 points was two better than the rest of the field on the day. An impressive 22 points were racked up over the front nine holes where he birdied the par three third hole. And a further 19points on the back nine, where a second birdie was recorded on the par five 12th hole, secured the coveted trophy for Pete.

Young-at-heart Danny Maxwell was his nearest challenger scoring 39 points for his round. By the turn he had chalked up 18 points, but some fine par scoring on the homeward trek saw him add a further 21 points for an impressive finish.

Sly Fox wins Half-Century Cup

Sly Fox wins Half-Century Cup

TOM Fox emerged champion of the over 50's at County Armagh Golf Club winning the Half Century Cup with an excellent 39 stableford points.

Seven points from the last three holes secured the win from Gerard Kelly who also returned 39 points on the day.

With 19 points accumulated on the front nine, 13-handicapper Tom continued that steady scoring for the homeward trek and added a further 20 points to take his tally to 39 points for the round.

Gerard produced a contrasting performance scoring 20 points over the front nine and adding a further 19 on the back, but off his 17-handicap he was thoroughly deserving of his second place.

Francis Curley's 21 points back-nine score was obviously better than the top two finishers, but he managed only to register 17 on the front nine. However, his 38 points score earned him third place.
