Neil chips in for Allen Cup win

Neil chips in for Allen Cup win

EXUDING all the confidence of a golfer in top form, Neill Cromwell reached for his wedge at the edge of the 17th green and chipped in for a superb birdie 3. It was a shot which ultimately clinched the Allen Cup, sponsored by JR McMahon, Armagh.

Lesser mortals would have taken up their putter for the shot, but Neil, who plays off a handicap of 3 and has produced gross scores of 70,69 and 69 in the previous three week's club competitions, delivered the deftess of chips to trickle his ball the 12 feet downhill and into the hole. A par at the final hole secured a nett 66, (gross 69).

Stephen Maloney produced a similar superb nett 66, but on countback it was that birdie at 17 which clinched the coveted trophy for Cromwell - unbelievably only his third piece of silverware in the last 18 years.

It must be said also, these two remarkable scores  were also achieved in less than favourable conditions - heavy showers and blustery winds playing havoc throughout the day.

Cromwell however, relished the challenge. He was one under after four holes with a birdie 3 at the long par four 4th. But surprisingly par three holes ruined an otherwise perfect outward trek - he bogeyed both the 7th and 9th holes.

A birde four at the 12th and then that birdie three at 17 however, saw him two under par for the back nine and one under par for his round, producing a nett 66.

Stephen Maloney's round was somewhat contrasting, conceding the majority of his shots across the back nine holes after shooting just a 2-over par front nine.

Brian Loney was the next best home and deservedly took the 0-12 handicap category first prize with  a nett 67. Two shots adrift on nett 69 was Mark Shannon, who will have been especially pleased with a one-over par back nine.

Ronan McWilliams proved a model of consistency for a nett 67 finish taking the 13-18-handicap category ahead of Danny McGee on nett 68.

And Gerry Kelly's nett 72 won the 19-28 handicap category with Charlie Johnston just a shot behind on nett 73.

Kelly's eye in for four points victory

Kelly's eye in for four points victory

PHILIP Kelly's shouts of 'fore' around County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday were not a warning to other golfers on the course. They were infact him celebrating a 'four' points victory in the Club Stableford competition.

The 14-handicapper produced a superb round of consistent golf to chalk up 23 points after nine holes and a further 22 points on the back-nine for a winning 45 points tally.

The excellent weather and course conditions produced some excellent scoring, Stephen Moloney's 41 points among them, and deservedly taking runners up in the competition. His birdie 3 at the final hole earned him the prize ahead of the very in-form Neil Cromwell, also on 41 points, but quietly satisfied at collecting the top prize in the 0-12 handicap category. Lee Stewart was runner up, again with another 41 point.

Paddy Daragh's 41 points secured him first prize in the 13-18 handicap category which was three points ahead of Steven Millar on 38points.

And Brendan Lynch celebrated victory by four points over Brian Cleland in the 19-28 handicap category with 41 points and 37 points respectively returned by the players.

Ronan is 'Mr Cool' for Medal win

Ronan is Mr Cool for Medal win

RONAN McWilliams was 'Mr Cool' as he produced a magnificent winning round in the June Medal competition at County Armagh Golf Club.

As temperatures soared on a scorching Saturday, 18-handicapper Ronan returned a sizzling nett 61 to claim his prize and with it a spot in the Club Championship top 20.

Two over par after nine holes, with shots dropped only at the 5th and 7th, Ronan knew a steady back-nine would surely get him in the prizes. Seven bogey's and two pars later he had returned an excellent nett 61 to deservedly lift the Medal prize.

Gerry Cullen, like Ronan, will undoubtedly feel the wrath of the Handicap Convenor after returning a nett 62 for the runners up prize. A triple-bogey seven at the 4th undoubtedly cost him on the day.

Barman Shea Brady's best gross score 68, nett 62 also secured him first prize in the 0-12 handicap category with Ian Millar a further two shots adrift on nett 64, taking second.

Davy Baird's early round telling off from within his own fourball was enough to spur him on to a nett 65 finish to claim the top prize in the 13-18 handicap category. And Alan Magwood followed up on his son James' success the previous week to claim the runners up prize with an excellent nett 66.

The cricketing weather obviously brings out the best in Andrew Rennie, as the former City club captain returned an excellent nett 64 to win the 19-28 handicap category by one shot - Stephen McGarvey the runner up with a nett 65.

And the new Green Marker Competition for over 70s, was won by Dr Oliver Woods with 40points.
