Marty has more than musical talent

IRISH traditional musician Marty Daly had a winning tune to his game as he triumphed in the Lonsdale Cup Open competition at County Armagh.

His nett 65 score was the perfect manuscript to lift the coveted trophy in the annual event, sponsored this year by Armagh City Hotel.

Playing off a handicap of 11, Marty, who is also the club's entertainments convenor, got his winning round off to a steady start before he dropped his first shot at the 4th hole. A double bogey at the 6th hole and a further dropped shot at the 9th were however, the only other sour notes on his front nine.

But he found the perfect rhythm on the final set with a double bogey at the 16th hole the only blemish on the remaining manuscript for a winning 65 nett.

Gary Livingstone, off a handicap of 17, paraded in behind Marty with a tuneful 66 nett for the runners up prize. Derek McKeever beat a steady drum to to third prize with a nett 67, his better back nine a winning beat better than Nial McGeown's 67.

Student Niall Brady meanwhile, was calling the tune among the low handicappers on the day - off a handicap of five, his one under par back nine and nett 68 deservedly earned him fifth prize. Rodney Villiers, signing for a similar nett 68 lost out to the young golfer on countback.

And the final note to the prize winners list was provided by Gary O' Reilly, returning also a nett 68.

Caolan's Sunday Special

Caolan's Sunday Special

CAOLAN Doyle was the young warrior to successfully battle the elements and take the honours in the final Sunday competition of May at County Armagh.

His 38 points won the stableford event which was kindly sponsored by the Banbridge based James Coburn and Son Ltd.

Sporadic heavy showers and wind battered the city course throughout the competition making life difficult for a considerably reduced field from the day before. But 20 points notched up over the front nine holes and a further 18 on the back nine secured victory for Caolan who plays off a handicap of 10.

However, the final outcome was only decided after countback, with Jerome Leer returning the same 38 points score. Six handicapper Jerome secured 21 points on the front nine with a birdie three at the 4th hole the highlight, and added a further 17 points on the homeward trek for the runners up prize.

Colin Clarke topped Category 1 with 37 points with big-hitting Kieran Murray runner up on 36 points.

Tommy Mackin's similar 37 points earned him first prize in Category 2 - a 'no score' at the 7th hole undoubtedly cost him the overall first prize. And Iggy Mallon was the category runner up - his 37 points just bettered by Tommy's on countback.

Shane Halleron's 37 points in Category 3 was five points better than all the rest - Brendan Lynch his closest rival on 32 points.

County Armagh Golf Club Captain Pat McAleavey presents Tommy Mackim with his prize after the recent Sunday Stableford competition. Included is Paul Doyle who collected first prize on behalf of son Caolan.
